D: Bloody Murders at Austin: On the night of the 24th, the wife of M. H. Hancock, a Carpenter, residing at 203 E. Water Street. Suffered blows by an axe - doctors thinking it impossible for her to recover...At the same time, Mrs. Phillips, wife of James Phillips, an architect, living at 308 W. Hickory discovered that her 28 year old son had been assaulted with an axe, his 18 month old child was covered with blood, but unhurt. The mans wife was missing. She was soon found outside the house (Eula Phillips) several houses away, dead, killed by an axe. Two Negroes, Dock Woods and Oliver Townson have been arrested on suspicion of the crimes. (p.2, c.4)
D: On the morning of the 26th, at Clarksville, 2 mil NW of Austin, the body of a 2 yr. Old mulatto boy was unearthed by hogs. The boys sister was believed also killed, aged 12, but her body has not been found. The mother, Mrs. Eanes, was arrested for the deed. Both children were born out of wedlock, the womans husband, Hugh Eanes, died suddenly 6 mos. ago in Austin from symptoms of poison. (p.1, c.5)

D: Miss Ebbie Moore, of Watervalley, Miss., returned to Henderson with her brother J. F. Moore and will make it her future home. (p.3, c.2)
D: Mrs. Brown, wife of A. J. Brown, who lives 3 mil. W of town, died on Sunday evening last. She had been an invalid for a considerable time. (p.3, c.3)
D; The remains of Eugene Garrison were brought to this city December 28th and deposited in the old cemetery. He died in San Marcos, Hays Co., of consumption (p.3, c.3) Note: Eugene Garrison, son of Patterson Gillespie and Mary Ann Garrison (July 14, 1866 - December 26, 1885).

D: From Pirtle: Mrs. Parr was buried here on Christmas Day. Mrs. McDavid was buried here today. (p.3. c.4) Note: The first lady would be Mrs. Sarah A. Parr wife of E. C. Parr born June 11, 1838 and who died December 23, 1885. She is buried in the Pirtle Methodist Cemetery. (p.3, c. 4)
I): Among the effects of Andrew G. Lawson, of Brocton, Mass., who died suddenly was a letter written in Swedish. His death formerly thought to have been from heart disease is now a suicide. (p.4. c.3)

D: Clarksville, Texas - January 18th. . I. Trilling committed suicide by shooting himself with a large bore pistol, possibly from depression from drinking. He was unmarried, 38 years old, steady and industrious. (p.1, c.4)
D: Woodstock, Ontario - January 18th, a young girl named Collins died as it was supposed recently. A day or two ago the body was exhumed prior to reburial an4 t1~e horrible discovery was made that she had been buried alive. Her shroud had been torn-to shreds and her knees drawn up to her chin. (p.1, c.4)
D: San Antonio - January 19th, over in Hidalgo Co., a store keeper, Charles Schanier, while writing at his desk was shot through the face by eight robbers and mortality wounded. A clerk was also wounded but will survive. (p.1, c.4)
0: Columbus, Neb. - Miss Dishner recovered consciousness today (Sun. Jan. 3rd). Nebraskas "Sleeping Beauty" recovered on the 70th day of her trance. She was conscious all of the time but could not move a muscle. (p.1, c.4)
D: Bishop Conaty of London and Paul Bandey, the French painter ~ General Irwin, veteran of the Mexican War died Sunday in ~~~il1e, Ky. ~
D: James J. Murray, editor of a legal journal, a young lawyer of the Alleghaney bar, died of delirium tremens in the Pittsburg jail on Sunday night. (p.1 c.5)
D: Marie Augustine, native of Africa, recently died in New Orleans at the age of 125 years. She was brought to this city (New Orleans) and sold as a slave 105 years ago and was 20 years of age at that time. She lived 5 years in Iberville Parish, LA and 1000 years in New Orleans. She had seven children, the youngest surviving son being 80 years of age. (p.3,c.6)

D: Milford, Pa. - Jan. 25th, Austin Shelton, the "Hermit of Lehman", died at his residence in Lehman, aged 83 years. Born Stony Brook, Conn. in 1802, he was a member of a well to do family and learned the blacksmiths trade. At the age of 32 he married. His wife died soon afterward and Sheldon disappeared from his native village. He became a hermit and lived in a cave for 30 yrs. near Lehman in Pike Co., having never bathed, combed his hair or used a razor. (p.1, c.2)
M: Henry Murdoch, a prominent farmer of Walker Co., Ga. eloped last night with his sister-in-law Sally Meyers aged l5yrs. His former wife had been dead seven weeks. (p.1 c. 7)

Friends called in a was taken to his home on John St. where he died at 4:15 this morning...Being a two children, he married a widow two months ago and did not get along with he his wife did not love him and he took 10 grams of arsenic. D: Little Ark: Feb. 11th, Monday night on the road to Illinois Courthouse, Sheriff Brown, with a posse attempted to arrest a number of persons for disturbing the peace. One of the resisting parties William Cloud was killed in the exchange of gunfire. (p.2, c.3)

D: Gainsville, TX: Feb. 16th, this morning about half past 10 oclock, the report of a pistol shot was heard in a small house in the Star Wagon Yard on Dye St. William Sharp, the proprietor staggered out and fell dead having been shot through the heart. It was reported that he committed suicide but no powder burns were found. Walter Cobb who was also in the house was arrested and jailed until a coroners jury was impaneled to conclude how Sharp met his end. Sharp formerly lived near Denton, Texas. . He leaves a family. Cobb lives in the Indian Territory. (p.1,c.5)
O: Dallas Tex., Feb. 18th, M. H. Cole living near Hutchings fled leaving his wife and children to elope with his niece Miss Maggie Cole, daughter of his brother. They fled to (Hutchings at the Charles Hotel. T. J. Pinion found them the next morning and took them before the sheriff. (p.l,c.6)

0: The Wills Point Chronicle - Mrs. J. M. Heard of that city has in her possession several letters written to her mother when she was a young lady by General Sam Houston. The mother of Mrs. Heard was Mrs. Anna W. Iron, daughter of Colonel Henry Raguet of Nacogdoches. Her husband was Robert Anderson Iron, who was elected to the Senate of the Republic of Texas in 1836, and appointed Secretary of State in 1838. Mrs. Iron buckled the sword upon Houston when he left home to take command of the Army of Texas in 1835. (p.2, c.2)

D: The boy, Valentine Sanford, who shot and killed his mother last spring, near Henrietta, has been sentenced to the penitentiary for life. (p.1, c.8)
April 21,1886Death: San Marcos, Texas April 14th In a quarrel over a game at ball among school boys at Staples Store today Polk Edwards 17, stabbed Ed Stanfield 20, in the heart causing death in a few minutes. Edwards is still at large his friends reside near Columbus, Texas. (P2 C5)
Death: Eastland, Texas April 14th a fatal affray one mile south of this town this evening between John and Tom Ellison on one side and W.G. Hardin on the other. Tom E. was killed and Hardin mortally wounded. The parties had been to town to court in a suit between John E. and Hardin. (P2 C5)
Death: Mr. T.J. Trammel Sr., one of Hendersons oldest and most respected citizens, departed this life last Friday morning in feeble health for some time he lived past his three score and ten. (P3 C2)

Death: Weatherford, Texas April 27th L.J. Malott charged with adultery left his wife in Indiana 19 years ago and ran off with Mary Waites going to Kansas, living there 9 years, when they moved to this county where they have lived since. He was arrested, convicted, jailed and fined $250.00. (P1 C8)
Death: The death of Father A.J. Ryan at Louisville a few days ago removed a revered Confederate. He was perhaps the greatest lyric poet the south ever produced wrote "Furl that Banner" and "The Sword of Lee" The latter he read himself at the dedication of the Lee monument at Lexington, Va. in 1882 (P2 C2)
Married: Mr. J.A. Ingram of this city and Mrs. Mollie S. Smith who lived near Dallas, were married on the 25th ultimate at the residence of the brides father, Rev. Mr. Parker officiating of the M.E. Church. (P3 C2)
Married: Last Thursday evening at 5 oclock at the residence of the bride six miles southwest of Henderson, Rev. I.J. Spence and Mrs. M.A. Spence presiding, Elder Thompson officiating. (P3 C2)
Death: Richard Whetstone colored, has been jailed for killing his mother-in-law, Jemme Wood, on Mr. Jimmersons place south of town her neck was broken. (P3 C3)
Other: B.A. Vansickle, brother of King Vansickle, of this county, who lives near Greenville, Hunt County, Texas was in Henderson last week. "Uncle Ben" formerly a long time citizen of Rusk County, having come here in 1841, before the county was organized. He lived in the county until 1853. He was district surveyor for 10 yrs. and held the office of Justice of the Peace a portion of that time. He was also engaged in mercantile business. He put up the second house built in Henderson. He is now 69 years old; a veteran in the war between Texas and Mexico and a citizen of the country under five different governments. (P3 C4)

Death: Nashville Mrs. Johnson of Madden Hill and her two daughters were shot by one of the daughters spurned suitors. Both girls are dead. The assailant, Polk Martin, killed himself. Mrs. Johnson is probably fatally wounded. (P1 C7)
Death: Neillsville, Wisconsin Mrs. Wright, who murdered her husband gave her confession while in jail implicating her paramour Daniel Allen who was suppose to poison his wife the same way. (P2 C2)
Death: From Gould Mr. Bradberrys daughter after being confined to her bed for six or seven weeks, with galloping consumption, has died this morning about 4 oclock. (P2 C5)
Death: Died on the 11th instant, at the residence of her son, Mr. V.C. Neeley, in this county, Mrs. Sarah Neeley aged 85 years, a member of the Missionary Baptist Church for fifty years. (P3 C3)
Death: Jefferson, Tex.- J.J. Haywood, tax collector of Marion County, shot and instantly killed Capt. J.T. Roots in the county Courthouse yesterday morning during a Commissioners Court meeting. The difficulty between them was politically motivated, county business and a personal affront. Roots was buried this morning with Masonic honors. (P4 C2)

Death: Friday last Lee Barnes was hanged at Dover, Arkansas for the murder of Charles Holman, a gambler, on November 26,1885. (P2 C1)
Death: Saturday Night at Houston, Tex. abt. 9:20 in an altercation at a saloon, Jim Ravell and George Metcalf shot each other. Ravell was wounded and Metcalf died. (P2 C 2)
Death: Springfield, Mass. May 2nd at 1 oclock today, Andrew J. Wiggins aged 30 years shot his wife aged 25 yrs. as they walked Dwight St. Wiggins ran down an alley as a crowd approached shot himself (killed). Mrs. Wiggins is critical. Domestic trouble was the cause. (P2 C3)
Death: Wheeling West Virginia, May 19th triple murder and suicide in Lincoln County on Monday night. Mrs. Margaret Denon, a widow, crazed with religious fanaticism said she had been called by the Lord to sacrifice herself and three children. With a carving knife, she cut her three daughters throats, aged 12,10 and 5 yrs. And stabbed herself in the heart. (P2 C3)
Death: Point Pleasant, West Virginia May 21st Applegrove, 20 miles below this point. Yesterday was the scene of family trouble. Mrs. James Guerin and sister Mrs. Thomas, both widows, each left with a number of children, reside near each other. The children argued over a stepladder. Mrs. Thomas took the ladder home with her. Her nephew Jimmie Guerin, aged 10, struck her with a large stone crushing her head, the woman soon dying. The dead womans daughter Eliza aged 15 yrs. secured a gun and killed her cousin who had killed her mother. The girl was arrested. (P2 C3)
Death: Wills Point May 19th at Martins mill on Monday night, a man named Lanham about 20 yrs. old, who married a young lady of 16, about three months ago, went to Ben Wheeler on Thursday and bought a bottle of morphine. His wife was taken ill and he called Mrs. Appleton (nee Mrs. Haycock) of the celebrated poisoning case that attracted so much attention about four years ago. But when Mrs. Appleton arrived the woman was dead. Yesterday he took the body off alone and buried it. Suspicion of foul play led to exhumation of the body and an autopsy revealed the morphine in her stomach. The wretch fled but was captured. (P2 C3)
Death: Ft Worth, May 19th last night Rosa Hearn, young widow of the south side and W.B. Sanderson, a locomotive engineer of Ft. Worth and Denver walked into the city and at about 11:00 oclock entered into a disreputable house at 1309 Main St. Shortly a pistol shot was heard following was a womans cries, "oh, I am shot!" upon entering the room, Mrs. Hearn was lying on the bed blood flowing from a wound in the side made by a 45 cal. Revolver. Medical attention was called. Both Mrs. Hearn and Sanderson claim the shot was accidental. It is feared she cannot recover. (P2 C3)
Death: Texarkana, Ark. May 19th George Washington, colored, living one mile north of town committed suicide yesterday evening by shooting himself with a pistol, The cause was jealousy. (P2 C4)

Death: The verdict in the famous Phillips murder case at Austin will surprise many people. There was an expectation that Phillips, the husband of the murdered woman, would be acquitted. Phillips discovered his wife was dishonoring him. He got an ax and awaited her return. When Mrs. Phillips and her paramour alighted from the carriage, Phillips hacked her to death. He tried to kill her companion and was himself wounded. Galveston News (P2 C2)

Death: Palestine, Tex. May 31st at 10:00 oclock this morning a fatal explosion occurred at the International and Great Northern round house killing two men and seriously wounding seven others. Engine 720 engineer, Henry Rhodes and machinist D.W. Rigs were killed. Engineer James Healy was struck by fragments from the boiler in the head and stomach and had his right leg broken. It is feared Healy will not live. Mr. Riggs, the worst mutilated, was buried at 4:00 p.m. (P1 C3)
Death: A train with one hundred kegs of powder aboard left Rathburn, Tennessee for Soddy Coal Mines. One of the kegs fell over and burst. A spark from the engine caused a terrible explosion. Engineer Floyd was killed outright and fireman Harper met a like fate. Two other men were horribly mangled. They lived six hours after the explosion. (P1 C3)
Death: G.W. Crenshaw and Alex Irving, two friends, met on the road near Cottula the other day. As was their custom, they drew and snapped their six shooters. Crenshaws gun went off, the ball entering Irvins right shoulder and passed downward killing him instantly. Crenshaw surrendered to the sheriff claiming, " He didnt know it was loaded!" (P1 C5)
Death: Will Whitehead and Miss Laura Harwood of Carrolton, Kentucky wished to marry, but the young ladys parents objected. On the morning of the 24th instant, the young man shot and killed his sweetheart and then fatally shot himself. (P1 C7)

Death: From Walkers Chapel a dead body was found two miles east of the Chapel. Justice Hamilton was summoned and a jury of inquest soon arrived. The verdict was that Henry Broox (colored) came to his end by a gun shot. Jim Dickinson and Douglass Hogg were arrested for the murder. (P3 C4)
Born: A very young pound hardware clerk has taken up his abode at the residence of Mr. G.R. Lacy. (P3 C1)
Death: Died on the 23rd instant at the residence of his brother in Cherokee County, Mr. S.F. Menefee. Mr. Menefee was one of our best citizens. Sympathy to his bereaved wife and fatherless little children. (P3 C1)

Death: On the 2nd instant a frightful tragedy occurred at Longview, which resulted in the killing of County Attorney Teague and the wounding of Marshall Tabler, following an altercation in a saloon between Teague and a bartender named Smith. Marshall Tabler broke it up.The next day Teague met Tabler and in the gunfight Teague was shot and killed. (P2 C1)

Married: Squire Dickson of Clayton, Georgia was awaken just after midnight and asked to marry a waiting couple. Jeptha Littleton aged 82 and Mrs. Ruthey Ann Thompson aged 75 had eloped from their children. They were accommodated. (P1 C6)
Death: M. Brooks alias W.H. Lenox Maxwell who was convicted of murdering Charles Arthur Preller was sentenced on the 14th in St. Lewis to be hanged on August 27th. (P2 C1)
Death: Died last Sunday evening at 1:15 oclock, Mrs. Maud W., wife if R.M. Richardson in the 20th year of her age, after a lingering illness of about four weeks. Her mortal remains lie in the Old Cemetery. (P3 C2)

Death: The Oldest Yet Baltimore, Md. July 27th, the certificate of death of William Scott (colored) was filed at the office of health department giving the deceased at being 153 years old. (P2 C3)
Death: Shreveport, La. July 28th yesterday, Miss Lucy V. Yancey, daughter of Mr. Daniel Yancey, suicided having been outraged some five months ago by a colored servant Ben Ford and finding she was pregnant. (P2 C3)

Death: Last Saturday Night Mr. W.W. Grubbs living near Woods hearing something in the hens roost, went out to turn loose his dog. The dog caught him in the bowels and literally tore his entrails out. He is not expected to live. (P3 C2)
Death: Died July 18,1886 Maud, aged 19 years, wife of Mr. Randolph Richardson and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Trammell. A loving wife, daughter and mother. (P3 C5)
Death: A man named Wash McLean arrived this morning in this city (Sherman, Texas) with a little girl aged 10 years and went to the post office to dictate a letter, three weeks ago, McLean, his wife and son and two daughters left Honeyville, Kansas for Holland, Bell Co., Tx. One and a half days into the trip, the boy had an epileptic fit and died during the night. A week from the day his son was buried, one of his daughters fell under the horses feet and was trampled to death. The mother succumbed to a fever near White Beard Hill and lived only four days. Other: General Lawrence Sullivan "Sul" Ross (candidate for Governor of Texas), was born in Bentonsport, Iowa on September 27,1838 to Captain Shapley P. and Catherine H. Ross of Virginia, who was married in Missouri, and came to Texas in 1839, to Waco where the father served as an Indian Agent. Suls sister, Mrs. Kate Padgett was the first white child born on McLennan County, Texas.
