Joseph and Rebecca Nolen of Blount County, Tennessee and Benton now Calhoun County, Alabama have many descendants in Rusk County. Tradition states their children were one quarter Cherokee.
Their children were: Jacob, born 1810, who married Ruth Covington; Zania, born circa 1815, who married Hiram Duggar; Shadrack, born circa 1817; Martha, born 1818, who married George L. Alexander; Allen, born 1820, who married Margaret; Celia Ann, born 1826, who married Samuel Boles; Sabra, born 1827, who married William S. Tinkle; Nancy, born 1829, who married John William Pike; Helen Elissa, born 1830, who married Sanford A. Bridwell; Rebecca, born 1831, who married Joseph Baird; and Matilda Elaine, born 1833, who married James A. Graham. Five of these children moved to Rusk County. Nancy (Mrs. J. W. Pike) moved to Bosque County, Texas.
In 1860 Sabra (Mrs. William Tinkle) lived at Caledonia near her sister Celia. Sabra died between 1861 and 1869 in Rusk County. Descendants include the Ross and Tinkle families.
Allen Nolen lived in Concord in 1860. He later moved to Shelby County where he died. Among descendants are Crumps, Littles and Gillespies.
Martha (Mrs. George L. Alexander) was living in Rusk County in 1870. She died in 1899 and is buried in the Caldedonia Cemetery. They had several sons, and one of their daughters, “Pattie,” married George H. Garrison.
Celia Ann (Mrs.
Samuel Boles) (see Boles account) and Hellen Elise “Hilsey” (Mrs. Augustus
Bridwell) (see Bridwell family) were the other children.
Jacob and Ruth Nolen both died in Alabama. Several of their children moved to Texas. Among them were Mary Jane (Mrs. Job Penny), grandmother of the late Mrs. Sam Ross of Kilgore; Peter L. Nolen, father of Mrs. Roy H. Laird of Kilgore; and William C. Nolen, who is buried in the New Prospect Cemetery, Rusk County. John A. Nolen lived in Overton.
