The community of TYE was originally named HINDS. However in 1900 the town name was changed form Hinds to TYE in Honor of Mr. John P.Tye who was the first postmaster and he was also the minister of the First Methodist Church of which he was a charter member.

One of the descendants of the TYE family Writes:
"The Tyes started out in Baltimore, Maryland. They moved to Whitley co. Ky. and raised families there until after the Civil War. This is what I have records of:   George Tye was born Feb. 1st, 1782, location unknown.  He died Sept. 9, 1845 in Whitley Co. Ky. He married Margaret Leah Pearce on Oct. 1, 1818 in Whitley Co. Ky.  She was his second wife.  Their children were:

George was a veteran of the War of 1812. Most of this family fought for the south in the Civil War. In about 1866.They found they could not stay in Ky. after the war. They left in a wagon train and went on to found the town of  Tye, Texas."

The population is about 1088 persons as of the census of 1990.

QRYTEXT: Hello. I live in Whitley Co., Kentucky. I am the great, great, grandson of Jane Tye Alsip. Her line stayed here in Ky. after the civil war. A big part of the family moved to Taylor County Texas, and settled in what became Tye, Texas. Do I have any cousins there now, that are into genealogy? I have a great deal of info, and would like to email old photos back and forth... also exchange lines. If you are a cousin, drop me a line at madmax@sun-spot.com THANKS! Steven H. Alisp , Corbin, Kentucky.
