Mrs. Emma Brown Passes Away

Mrs. Emma Brown passed away at her hone in this city Saturday at noon. Her death came as a shock to her many friends throughout this section as she had only been sick a few days, and her illness was not generally known. Mrs. Brown was a native of Rusk county, being Miss Emma Wright, born on the Oakland community in 1860. She was married to V. S. Brown in 1882, to which union five children were born, four of whom survive their mother; Mrs. John Young, of Garrison; Mrs. W. H. Gibson, Mr. Bill Brown and Mrs. Janie Spharler, of Henderson. Mrs. Brown was a member of the Oakland Methodist church for fifty years and in which church her membership remained continuously. She was a sweet spirited, Christian woman, always possessing a happy disposition, scattering sunshine and happiness, not only in her home but in the lives of those with whom she came in contact. While the body sleeps beneath the sod the gentle, Christian influence of this good mother will linger in the memories of those who knew and loved her. Funeral services were held at the family home Sunday morning, conducted by Rev. E. G Cooke, after which the remains were carried to Pine Grove, where services were concluded by her pastor, Rev. R. W. Jones.

OBITUARY of Mr. Veasy Shannon Brown

date not recorded

The object of this sketch, Mr. Veasy Shannon Brown, was born in this county on the 13th day of June, 1857, and his spirit passed quietly from his tired body, at his home 5 miles east of Henderson, Nov. 29, 1896, at 8 p. m. He professed religion at Oakland church in 1885 and during the same year united with the C. P. church at Pine Grove. Two years ago he contracted measles, from which he never fully recovered, the disease settling on his lungs, causing his death.

Of his life no encomium is too sweat, and of his death volumes might be written or sermons preached, for he lived an honest life and died a christian death more than this can be said of no man.

Time reaches us many lessons, many of which are repeated so often, that we grow indifferent to them unless they are illustrated with some object around which the tendrils of our affections have become closely entwined. So it is with death; the intuitive knowledge possessed by all that we are born to die lies latent in us until we are brought face to face with the fact that some loved one is passing "from death unto life." And truly Veasy has passed "from death unto life: for the evidences of a sweet and happy hereafter that clustered around his dying bed are indisputable.

By his death a wife is bereft of a devoted husband; five children deprived of an indulgent fathers love and protection; a mother grieved over the death of a son; (end missing)
