F. N. Farley is Awarded Medal
F. N. Farley, known among his friends here as Creech, has been awarded a splendid medal by the National Guard, Texas Calvary, for heroic work during a fire on a Galveston pier last Sept. Private Farley has been in this service for some ten months & no doubt has made good in all respects as has been attended by this award. He is the son of Mr. & Mrs. J. M. Farley of this city.

Ilicit Still Captured
Sheriff Hale captured an ilicit still near old London, ten miles northwest of Henderson Friday evening. The still was located in the smoke house of a Mr. Arthur Canseler. Some 3 barrels of mash was found, but no whisky...

Fire destroyed the business house & stock of merchandise of Virgil Miner at Overton about 3 o'clock Thurs. morning. The house carried insurance to the amount of $2500 & the stock of merchandise to the amount of $7000. The business house of W. H. Barton on one side & the State Bank on the other side were considerably damaged by the fire. The stock of merchandise of Mr. Barton & also the bank fixtures were damaged by the heat & the smoke.

Visits Father
Mr. Barney Williams left Sun. for Detroit, Mich. to visit his father who he has not seen in several years. Mr. Williams is in the employ of the J. Williams? --- (faded out on my copy)

Welch Watt left Mon. for Forest, Tex., where he goes to accept the position as cashier of the First State Bank of that little city, having recently been elected to the position by bank directors. Welch had made good in everything he has put his hand to. He is one of those rare young men who has an ideal, who has bent his every energy to the accomplishment of something worth while. He is brilliant, energetic & full of business. His friends here congratulate him & bespeak for him success in his new place as cashier.

Case Transferred
The Rasberry case has been transferred from this, to Smith Co. for a new trial. It will be remembered that Mr. Rasberry is charged with murder & was convicted here in a trial last year, a verdict of 99 years.

Bitten by Mad Dog
Emmett Winfry, the little 9 year old son of Lem Winfry of the Wood Glenn community, was bitten by a mad dog Sat. afternoon. The dog, about a half bull, belonged to Marvin Propes, a neighbor. It came to Mr. Winfry's, bit his dogs, and from then to the little boy who was playing nearby. The child was bitten on the wrist & on the upper arm. The family, while suspicious of the dog's actions, did not know it had hydrophobia until it returned an hour later & bit Mr. Prope's horse, also hogs & made an effort to get to him. Citizens then remembered about 6 weeks or 2 months ago a strange dog came through the community & bit several dogs there. The child was brought to Henderson Sun. & physicians consulted. They advised Pasteur treatment at once. Monday afternoon he was carried to Austin. About 6 weeks or 2 months ago a strange dog made its appearance in Henderson. It worked out South street in about 1 hour & left out on Ragley ave. It's possible it was the same dog as it headed in that direction.

Transferred to Penitentiary
Transfer agent, Bud Russell, left Henderson Mon. morning with 3 negroes, Willie Adams, Bill Newman & Jim McGilvey, for the penitentiary. These men were convicted at the last session of court, 2 for forgery & 1 for burgulary.

Auto Burns on Road
Tues. evening, Jan. 25, Dr. D. E. Hughes, optician, was driving to Mt. Enterprise to make one of his usual professional visits. When near Mr. Fleniken's a few miles out on the Nacogdoches road his seven passenger Nash auto caught fire under the hood. He called Mr. Fleniken to assist him & they fought the fire as best they could. Frank Matlock, driving W. O. McClure's truck came up behind them & also joined in the effort to put out the car. The splendid car of Dr. Hughs was badly burned & is said to be a complete loss. The cause of the fire had not been determined at last reports. Mt. Enterprise Progress

Mrs. C. G. Dunklin left Fri. morning for San Angelo. The friends of Mrs. Dunklin regret that the condition of her health forced her to seek treatment in the west again. Mr. Dunklin will move permanently to San Angelo just as soon as he can wind up his business affairs.

Mr. B. Hamlett has opened up a fancy grocery business in the building next door to the Post Office. He will be glad to have his friends share their trade with him. Examining Trial Held
An examining trial was held Mon. before J. A. Ward, Justice of the Peace, in the case of Harvey Nix, charged with the killing of Freeman Lewis recently. At the conclusion of the hearing Justice Ward raised the bond from $1500 to $4000, which was made.

Destructive Fire Friday Morning
About 3:15 o'clock Friday morning fire was discovered in the J. E. Adams warehouse which is just across the railroad track from the Rusk Co. Lbr. Co. planning mill. The fire dept. was called out but before it could reach the place, the flames had reached such headway, the fire could not be controlled. The entire building & its contents were destroyed. The loss to Mr. Adams was approx. $4000, with about $3000 insurance. Rusk Co. Lbr. Co. loss, windows, doors, shingles and other builders material, about $3000 with no insurance. The fact that a strong east wind was blowing was the only thing that saved the Rogers Planning Mill with all its lumber & machinery. The origin of the fire is unknown, supposed to be combustion or from smoldering fire which originated from match earlier in the night.

Sunday Night's Storm
A rather heavy storm passed over the county Sunday night about 7:30 or 8 o'clock. No particular damage done so far as The Times has been able to gather, except a tenant house on Marvin Adam's place was utterly blown away. No one was living in the house & no personal injury done.

Illicit Still Captured - Six Negroes in Jail
Sheriff Hale, Sam Gaut, John Cooper & Ralph McMu--- (tear in paper) captured a still ----- ----ing it near Glenfawn Sat. morning. Mr. Hale had located the still, or had good knowlege of the immediate place of its location, Fri. morning. In order to catch the offenders of the law over the act, he & the other officers mentioned hid themselves nearby Fri. night. They saw the negroes as they went to the still at night & saw them actually operating it...

Sheriff Hale, deputy Gaut & McMurray captured an illicit still in the New Prospect community Sat. night. No products of the still were found. Salem McCoy, a negro, was arrested in connection with the same.

Rusk Co. Meet
The annual Rusk Co. inter-scholastic meet was held in Henderson Fri. & Sat., Mar. 25 th & 26 th... The following are first place winners in declamation: Jr. girl, Margaret Brown, Henderson; jr. boy, Gordon Alexander, Henderson; sr. girl, Clara Sue Williamson, Laneville; sr. boy, Bruce McMillian, Henderson. Rural school division, the winners are: jr. girl, Grace Phillips, Chapman; jr. boy, Bob Dulaney, Compton; sr. boy, Jodie Freeman, Chapman... The Rusk Co. contestants will go to Timpson Friday to attend the district meet. A place in spelling was obtained & Winnie Thomas will go as a representative... A school election was held last Sat. W. Z. Reed was the newly elected member of the school board. The 8 th annual conference of the 3rd Dist. Congress of Mothers met in Athens Wed., Thurs. & Fri. of last week. Mrs. H. B. Chamberlain, Dist. president, reported a splendid meeting. An interesting as well as amusing "Kangaroo Court" was held recently, the proceedings being carried on in a most earnest manner by the students of H. H. S. Emory Allen was charged with "willfully & maliciously setting afire "Watts & Adams warehouse." Bruce McMillan, his defendant, however, convinced the jury of his innocence & their verdict was "not guilty"... Mr. Hodges wants 26 miners to meet 26 coal mine owners & form a board which shall settle it.

Co. Commissioner, W. E. Harris states that a grading crew will camp at W. J. Jarrell's place on the Mt. Enterprise Rd. within the next 10 days & grading will begin on the highway south.

Carroll Hays Wins at Amarillo
Carroll Hays who won the loving cup for Minden High School a Jr. Declaimer in the Rusk Co. contest, has won as Sr. Declaimer in the Amarillo High School. He will go to the district meet at Canyon City the 15 th & 16 th of this month. Carroll is the eldest son of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Hays of Minden & is one of the brightest boys in our county.

Stricken with Paralysis
Mr. J. P. McClarty of this city suffered a stroke of paralysis last Wed. & has been very ill ever since. His condition is thought to be serious, yet his friends hope that he may soon regain his former health.

A fire broke out Sun. afternoon at the home of Mrs. W. C. Buford in North Henderson destroying about 1/2 the roof & the kitchen. The immediate response of the fire dept. & the citizens saved the entire building from the flames. The residence being outside of the water limits, Chemicals were used in extinguishing the fire.

Margarett Brown, daughter of Judge & Mrs. R. T. Brown won the District Cup for the 3rd time in a row, as the Junior Declaimer.

Robert McCord, the 17 year old son of R. T. McCord, living in the Miller Community, was accidently shot Saturday about noon while fishing at Round Pond on Johnson Creek. Mr. McCord was fishing in a boat and reached for his shot gun which was in an adjoining boat, drawing the gun toward him while holding the muzzle, the hammer struck the edge of the boat which caused it to discharge the load, striking him in the upper arm, tearing away the muscle near the shoulder & inflicting a dangerous wound. The boys who were with Mr. McCord cut away a piece of the shirt & stuffed it in the wound to prevent bleeding until a physician could reach him. The buggy was secured & the young man rushed to his home where physicians dressed his wound. The wound is not thought to be serious, but will invalid the young man for some time.

Storms of a cyclonic nature passed over Rusk Co. about 3:o'clock Fri. afternoon, dropping down in several sections & doing considerable damage in some places. One passing to the south, dropped just north of Minden, destroying the barn & a tenant house of Henry Hays; It dropped again a little farther on at Wilber Brook's place, blew away his barn & completely destroyed his supply of feed stuff of all kinds, also doing damage to fences & property. It then struck about the widow Meyers & blew her residence entirely away.

Mrs. R. B. Carter of Houston is visiting her parents, Dr. & Mrs. J. E. Ross.

Mrs. J. E. Smith of Alexandria, La., is the guest of her parents, Mr. & Mrs. S. R. Davenport.

Hon. L. Webb & Supt. G. C. Padgett went to Austin Friday on business connected with the schools.

Mr. & Mrs. J. E. Strong have just returned from Marlin.
