ALFRED WYLIE

Alfred Wylie, fifth son of William E. (Bill) Wylie and Monnie Meyer Wylie, was born May 22, 1926, in Henderson at home, 109 West Ragley. This house, built in 1919 by Bill and Monnie Wylie, sits on land originally belonging to Gustave Meyer, the maternal grandfather. The house next door is the Meyer homeplace where Monnie Wylie was born in 1893.

Alfred attended school in Henderson, graduating in 1943. After one year at Baylor University, he went into the army, artillery division, seeing action in Italy. In 1947, he entered Rice University and graduated in 1949. He married Gladys Marquerite Mugg, on June 4, 1949, in Houston. They have five children: Joe Wylie (January 31, 1951); Kathryn Marquerite Wylie Deason (December 18 1952); Edith Wylie Miller (July 17, 1954); Mary Wylie (December 24, 1956) and Martha Wylie (September 9, 1959). The only one of the children not born in Henderson and delivered by Dr. Lynn Hilbun is Mary, who was born in Hemphill, Texas, where Al was coaching. All five children are graduates of the University of Oklahoma, except Martha who soon will be.

Joe married Karen Denise Pilgrim of Owasso, Oklahoma, and they have one daughter, Rachel (October 16, 1979). They live in Norman, Oklahoma. Joe played halfback on the Oklahoma team and is now a C.P.A. with Rebel Oil in Oklahoma City.

Kathy married Glen Allen Deason, who is with the Department of Public Safety. She is a Registered Dietitian and does consultant work for Big Ben Hospital in Alpine, Texas, where they live, and for the hospital in Fort Stockton. They have two children; Caleb (June 8, 1979) and Sarah Marguerite (September 13, 1981).

Edith married Forest Leonard Miller III. They live in Nacogdoches, where he is completing an M.B.A. Edith taught school for one year at Spur, Texas, before marrying. She is a drive-in teller at Freedonia State Bank.

Mary lives in Houston, is a C.P.A. and works for Wanda Petroleum.

Martha is working on degrees in both Environmental Design and Interior Design. She plans to spend the spring of 1982 studying in London, England, and in Scotland.

Al coached for nine years and took a M.B.A. at Texas A & M before returning to Henderson, where he is now a loan officer and director at Citizen’s National Bank. Gladys teaches English at Tyler Junior College. She has a B.A. from Rice and a M.A. from Stephen F. Austin State University. They live in the original Wylie home on West Ragley, having added to and extensively remodeled it.
