John and I, Truman have lived in Rusk County these many years, each being born and brought up in a rural community, I in Crims Chapel and he in New Prospect. Even though we lived only a few miles apart, we did not meet until June 1924. In December 1924 we had our first date. When I told my parents that I was going out with John Wright, my father wanted to know more about him, such as who his father was, etc. I was surprised to know he had known the Wrights and had been Mr. Wright’s best man in their wedding.
My mother’s parents were Daniel P. and Melvira Crow. My father’s parents were William and Mary Eliza Gibson. My parents were Churchill Flemming and Maude Crow Gibson. John’s parents were Lewis T. and Clara Stanton Wright.
John and I were married on January 8, 1927. Brother R. L. Wood, pastor of First Baptist Church, Henderson, performed the ceremony. We are the parents of two daughters. Neva Nell is married to Adrian Burk, an attorney in Houston. They are the parents of two children, Rebecca Ann (deceased) and Robert Adrian (Bob) of Austin. Bob is married to Tana Vernon, who has a daughter, Jessica, and they have a son, Robert Adrian II, our first great-grandson.
Barbara Ann is married to Gene Smith, who is Principal of Henderson High School. They have two children; Gena Lynn, who teaches first grade at Montgomery Elementary School in Henderson; and John Stephen, who is a junior at Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches.
John has been a banker since 1926. He has been with Citizens National Bank for fifty-one years. He served on the City Council from 1948 until 1958. Our City Hall was built during that time. He is also active in the First Methodist Church. John’s hobbies include sports such as fishing and hunting. I enjoy gardening and am a charter Member of the Redbud Garden Club. I am an active member of the First Baptist Church. I enjoy playing bridge, and I am a member of the Modern Study Club. John and I both like to travel. Submitted by Truman Wright
