WOODROW WILSON SMITH

James and Cathern Smith left Chester County, South Carolina with all their possessions. They brought with them three sons: William M., John, and A.O. If there were any daughters, they are not known. They settled in Carroll County, Tennessee. About 1848 they moved four miles east of Henderson. Two years later they again moved about one mile west of Pine Hill, where they settled.A.O. Smith returned to Carroll County, Tennessee to marry Susan Jones in 1854. They came back to Pine Hill, Texas in 1859. All of this traveling was done in a wagon drawn by mules or on horseback.
Albert O. and Susan Smith had six children: John R., Albert O., Lee (Sug), Mattie Ann, J.A.J. (Jimmy), James Harvey, and Hershel Riley (Tobby).
Jimmy Smith married Mattie Ann Wylie, whose father was William Wylie. He came to Texas from Carroll County, Tennessee at an early age. His father gave him two slaves, three mules, and some money. William Wylie came to Texas and settled between the Chapman and Pine Hill communities.
William Wylie married Caroline H. Rap, December 19, 1839. To this union were born eight children: Elizabeth Virginia, Tabitha Jane, Sarah Louise, William Rap, Adam Morrow, Octavo Josephine, Francis Shay (Bud), and Caroline Evaline. Carolyn Wylie died September 23, 1858.
Mary Elizabeth Rap, sister of Caroline Wylie, married William H. Bullock about 1849 or 1850. Their children were: Mary Elizabeth, James R., and William H. Jr. William H. Bullock, Sr. died November 12, 1854.
William Wylie and Mary E. Bullock married October 7, 1860. To this union were born: John Erwin, Samuel Rupal, Martha Ann, Joseph Birdwell (Joe), George Elbert, and Samantha Jane.
J.A.J. (Jimmy) and Mattie Smith had thirteen children: Suddie, Lizzie, A.T. (Tipps), Tom J., Bessie, Cassie, Johnnie Gay, James Harvey, J. Frank, and Curtis R. Three died at an early age.
Tom J. Smith married Ruby G. Milam, October 15, 1916. Ruby’s parents were Henry and Sallie Kyle Milam. Henry and Sallie came to Texas from Rex, Georgia about 1906 and lived near Minden, Texas. Sallie Milam burned to death by falling into a fireplace while no one was in the room. To the union of Henry and Sallie were born: Will, Jimmy, Nannie, Nellie, and Ruby. To the union of Tom and Ruby Smith were born: Woodrow Wilson, James Harvey, Mary Ann, and Robbie Jo.
Wilson Smith married Nina Marie Joplin, May 12, 1951. They had two children, Kathy Ann and Thomas Calvin. Nina Smith died November 13, 1968, and Wilson married Mary Sue Thompson Campsey, June 14, 1969.
The information contained herein was taken in part from a history of the Pine Hill Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. written in 1917 by J.W. and Robert Cyphers, and the family Bible of William Wylie, which is now in the possession of Taylor Wylie. William Wylie recorded the events as they occurred.
