I, Janie Wylie Shumate, was born in Chapman on May 16, 1914, daughter of William Ross and Nellie Anderson Wylie. I lived on a farm on the Pine Hill road and enjoyed a wonderful family, having four brothers and five sisters.

I graduated from Henderson High School in 19131 and later took business courses at Panola Junior College in Carthage, Texas. I worked for fifteen years as secretary for Carthage High School principal.

Fred L. Shumate and I were married December 24, 1937. Fred was the grandson of J.H. and Harriet Shumate, and his maternal grandparents were John Charles and Jane Adams, who came from England to America when Fred’s mother was six months of age. Fred is the son of G.L. and Constance Shumate of Appleby, Texas.

We have been Texans all of our lives. We have lived in Henderson, Tyler, Beaumont, Orange, and Carthage.

A gas field had been discovered in Carthage, and Fred was employed by Champlin Petroleum Company in the Production Department and later advanced to Production Superintendent. He retired in 1979, with thirty-three and one-half years of service. We moved back to Henderson in 1980, where we attend South Main Church of Christ.

Fred and I have three sons. Fred Terry, our oldest, was born in Henderson, July 7, 1939. He married Jonetta Moss of Mangham, Oklahoma, and they have two sons, Torre and Todd. They are now in Dallas and Terry is employed by Sam P. Wallace, Inc. as comptroller.

Don Wylie, our second son, was born in Henderson, March 17, 1941. He married Lorene Schneider of Shertz, Texas. They have two boys, Kevin and David. Don received his degree from Stephen F. Austin State University. He is employed as Assistant Principal of La Marque High School

Our third son, Charles William, was born in Orange Texas, July 11, 1945. He married Lois Bows of San Marcos, Texas. They have three children—Fred, Ross, and Sara. Sara is a special treat for us as she is the only girl in our family.

Charles graduated from The University of Texas at Austin, where he majored in mechanical engineering. He is employed by Champlin Petroleum Company as construction engineer. He and his family live in Friendswood, Texas.
