The J.E. Ross family came from Spartanburg, South Carolina with Uncle Jim Ross, father of Dr. Jesse Ross, Sr., referred to as the "old" doctor. Dr. Ross, Sr. graduated from Tulane Medical School in Louisiana in the 1880’s. He practiced medicine in the Church Hill Community until his death in 1927. His wife was Aunt Betty Strong, whose descendants came from Georgia.
Dr. Ross, Sr. and Betty had three children: Grady Ross, a lawyer, Dr. Jess Ross, Jr., and Mary Lou Ross Carter. Grady was an attorney, who at one time was Attorney General for the Santa Fe Railroad in Galveston. Dr. Ross, Jr. practiced medicine in Henderson from 1935 until his death in August, 1957. Mary Lou married R.B. Carter, who was the manager of the Rice Hotel in Houston.
Present descendants of Dr. Jesse Ross, Jr. are James Ross, a pharmacist, and his wife, Sara J. Ross. They have two children. Grady Ross had no children. Mary Lou Ross Carter had two children, now residing in Houston, Texas.
The Ross homeplace is located at 307 North Marshall. This home was erected in 1923 and has been the home of Dr. and Mrs. J.E. Ross, Sr., Dr. J.E. and Mrs. Ross, Jr. and presently is the residence of James and Sara Ross. It is hoped that Jim and/or Jana Ross will next live in the home to extend occupancy by the Ross family to the fourth generation.
