JOHN AND SALLY MOORE

The following bio was taken from page 312 of the book entitled “Rusk County History” compiled and edited and used with permission of the Rusk County Historical Commission.

 John Moore and his wife, Sally, came to America from Ireland around the 1800’s and settled in Georgia.  Their children were: Sam, William Gaines, Patrick, Louis, Turner and Cummings.  After living in Georgia for a few years, the family moved to Hamburg, Arkansas.  Three sons – Sam, William Gaines, and Patrick – moved to Laneville, Texas with their families, leaving Louis, Turner, and Cummings in Arkansas.

 William Gaines Moore, born December 1, 1819, first married Mary Hopkins, April 24, 1838, daughter of William and Hettie Hopkins.  They had four children.  Their first daughter, Sara Hester, born February 16, 1857, died August 4, 1870.  The first son, John William Henley, who was born November 8, 1958, on January 9, 1881 married Leona Elizabeth Koonce.  He died December 24, 1949 and she was born January 1, 1859 and died July 24, 1947.  Mary Margaret (November 6, 1860-November 17, 1898) married George Franklin Johnson about 1878.  James Samuel Patterson (born 1863-?) married Martha Jane Johnson.

 Mary Hopkins Moore died in Hamburg, Arkansas, October 8, 1863.  Soon after this William moved to Laneville, Texas with his four children.  There he met and married a widow, Martha Ann Elizabeth (Cook) Keiser.  By a former marriage she had a daughter, Mary A. Keiser, who married T.J. Swinney and had a son, Benson Swinney.

 William Gaines and Martha Ann Elizabeth (Cook) Moore had a daughter, Elizabeth (Betty) Priscilla (October 5, 1869- November 3, 1941).  She married Henry Lafayette Johnson (May 28, 1859-June 14, 1934).  Henry and Betty had eight children: Allen Lafayette (September 19, 1886-January 6, 1901); Emery Cummins (October 15, 1889-May 11, 1941); who married on May 3, 1914 Mary Elliot Koonce (September 22, 1890—July 7, 1981); Annie Belle (May 19, 1892—November 3, 1978), married on December 22, 1912, Ernest John Walker (December 1, 1888-August 6, 1967).  Two children: Mattie Priscilla (March 30, 1917) who married on August 31, 1940 Edward Eugene Gage (October 27, 1915). Their children are: Sandra Jean, born July 8, 1942; Ciryle, born August 20, 1945; and Reba Ernestean, born October 13, 1948.

 Ernest Johnson, born September 19, 1920 married Alberta Brandes of Pledger, Texas, June 16, 1949.  Their three children are Melanie Jo, born July 9, 1954; David Michael, born December 22, 1955; and Alicia Dawn, born August 20, 1959.

 Maples Charles (September 12, 1896-March 20, 1928) married Laura Gertrude Locke, (September 20, 1917).  After Laura died on June 1, 1926, Maples married Lottie Hale of Carthage, Texas in 1927.

 Gladys, born October 3, 1899, married Crawford William Jones, January 15, 1922.  He was born June 6, 1897.

 Lottie Reba, born June 12, 1903, first married George J. Armstrong, February 14, 1938, and then June 6, 1940 married George L. Crawford.

Myrtle Velma, born October 23, 1905, first married Lee Roy Hughes on December 23, 1923. Her second marriage was to Albert Carlisle on March 8, 1935, and her third marriage was to Mays McCarter. (See Robert Johnson family)
