I will begin my account with a copy of a part of a letter written by my grandfather, Frank Hamilton Lawler, at the beginning of 1939:

“My family tree as far as I know it – My father’s grandfather was born and raised in Ireland and came to America while young.  Married and settled in Henderson County, Tennessee where both my grandfather and my father, J. H. Lawler, were born and raise.  My father served four years in the Civil War, then came to Texas in 1869.

“My mother’s father was Aaron Ballew.  He was raised in Rutherford County, Tennessee.  He married Martha Nichols of the same place and they moved to west Tennessee and raised their family.  There my mother and father were married.  They also came to Texas in 1869 and are buried with my mother and father in Milam County, Texas.”

James Hamilton Lawler, son of F. H. and S. E. (Ballew) Lawler, born on July 22, 1854 in Henderson County, Tennessee, and Sally Mixon Lacy, daughter of William R. and Susan R. (Price) Lacy – born in Fayette County, Alabama, were married December 28, 1878 at the home of W. R. Lacy.  Their first child, Alice, was born in Rusk County.  They then returned to Milam County where Maggie E. was born.  Then they came back to Rusk County, where Emily, Frank, and James Fred were born.  Back in Milam County again the couple had Gerald, who died in infancy, Monnie S., Eula Mae, and William Roy.  Then after a final move back to Rusk County, Bonnie L. and Annie Gertrude were born.

In the early 1900’s the Lawler’s settled at Shiloh, about fourteen miles southeast of Henderson in Rusk County, until their deaths.  Sally Mixon Lacy Lawler died January 22, 1940.   Frank Hamilton Lawler died May 30, 1941.  They are buried in Maple Grove Cemetery near Minden in Rusk County, Texas.
