My husband was born March 1, 1941 in Bryan, Texas, the eldest child of Charles H. S. and Helen (Ross) Douglas. With the exception of three and one-half years of Navy duty in Rhode Island, he has lived his entire life in Texas. His only brother is William Henry and his sister is Helen Genevieve Irwin.
I, Barbara, was born July 26, 1940 in Bristow, Oklahoma, the second daughter in a family of four children. My parents are Raymond and Alberta Christina (Jordan) Cole. My sisters are Patricia Rae Everett and Judith Blythe Klaevemann; my brother is Robert Allan Cole.
As an employee of Sinclair Pipeline Company, my father had to move several times during the first sixteen years of my life. In 1956, we were transferred to Corpus Christi, Texas. It was there that “Doug” and I met and married in 1962.
Our daughter, Kimberly Christine, was born May 27, 1964 at Quonset Point, Rhode Island. In February 1966, after Doug’s discharge from the Navy, we returned to his hometown of Brownsville, Texas. Our second daughter, Tammy Jean, was born there on March 26, 1967.
In August 1968, Doug accepted a job with Sinclair Pipe Line (now Atlantic Richfield) and we moved to Gainesville, Texas. Our son, Charles III, was born March 21, 1969. Two years later (June 1970) we were transferred to East Texas and chose Henderson as the town in which to buy our home.
Both Doug and I can trace one branch of our family back to Germany. His great-great-grandparents were Johann Rose (Rosz) and Gertrude Dressler (Destler). His great grandparents on his father’s side were Samuel David Douglass of England and Rosanne Whitehouse of Maryland. My sixth great grandparents were Johannes Dingler and Nancy Paschell. (This line was composed of Sheriff, Brewster, Hudgins, Johnson, and finally Cole.) The Coles are reportedly from England, having migrated from there to Georgia, to Louisiana, to Oklahoma.
Extensive research has been done on one branch of my mother’s family, and her Blythe line was been traced to Reverend Major James Blythe (born 1735), and his wife, Elizabeth King. The complier of the material on the Blythe line traced the King, Trigg, and Tippens families back to the emigrants, and the related Bishop line back to 1804.
Doug has been an assistant coach for our son’s baseball team since he began playing six years ago. He has served as a board member of The Henderson Boy’s Baseball Association and belongs to the Rusk County Pilots Association. He has a private pilot’s license, enjoys all types of sports, and keeps anything electrical or mechanical in “tip-top” shape around the house.
I have always been involved with P.T.O. and various other school activities. My interest in arts and crafts was an asset during my years as a Camp Fire Leader, but my latest hobby of family research has been a fascinating new experience.
We enjoy living in East Texas and hope to remain here for many years to come.
