WILLIAM WHITTEN GARY, b. 10 February 1790 and d. 13 Dec. 1856 in Valley Mills, Bosque Co., Texas. He married Rutha GORDON, ca. 1810, SC.
William and Rutha were both born in South Carolina into families which had arrived there from Virginia in the mid—eighteenth century. William Whitten GARY was born 10 Feb 1790, and died 13 Dec 1856 in Valley Mills, Bosque Co., TX; and Rutha GORDON was born 14 Sept 1791, and died 6 Apr 1868 in Valley Mills, TX. Both are buried in the GARY Cemetery located on the Hill View Ranch, owned by George Boutwell. This is 4 miles south of Clifton on the south side of FR Road 2602, just west of State Highway 6, Bosque Co., TX.
Rutha was the daughter of Govin Gordon, born circa 1749 in Fairfax Co., VA and died 16 July 1814 in Jones Co., GA and Sarah Clark born circa 1749 in Fairfax Co., VA and died 9 August 1835 in Green Co., AL.
William and Rutha married in 1810, and in about 1816, after the birth of their first two children, began the long trek west to Texas. Along the way, they resided in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Rusk Co., Texas.
In 1816 he was living in Jones County, GA when he purchased 200 acres on the Bush River from the Sheriff of Newberry County. In 1817 he sold these 200 acres to William Gary, Sr., of Baldwin County, Georgia. He was in Dallas County, Alabama where on April 1,1822, he is listed as serving in the 3rd Division, 7th Brigade, 22nd Regiment of Alabama. They may have been in Perry County, Alabama in 1830, and in Sumter Co., Ala in 1840.
William and Rutha and some of their children traveled on to Bosque Co (at the time McLennan County) by 1852. William and his son, Govy, bought land on February 19 of that year. William, Govy and Isaac were on the 1852 McLennan County tax roll. Others to go to Bosque County were daughter Sarah Ann, sons Andrew J. and Matthias, daughter Adaline with her husband John H. Robertson, and several of the grandchildren including John A. Thomas, son of deceased daughter, Elizabeth Thomas.
In 1852 William built a cabin on the West bank of the Bosque, a short distance above the mouth of Neils Creek, and claimed the distinction of being the "upper settler on the Bosque".
