To all Friends and Supporters of the Allatoona Texas Monument Campaign (ATMC):
Thank you all for the encouragement and advice that you are providing to this campaign, hereafter known as the ATMC. We truly believe that the time has come to honor the brave Texans of Young’s/Ector’s Brigade who drove the Federal forces to their forts at Allatoona Pass, on October 5, 1864. On behalf of the monument committee; consisting of Mr. Jim Dale of Waleska, Georgia; Mr. Chuck Carlock of Ft.Worth, Texas; and myself, I wish to announce that this project is "double timing" to completion. New supporters are enlisting daily. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has approved our request to place the marker at the battlefield site. The Etowah Valley Historical Society (EVHS), a 501.3.C organization, has agreed to be our banker. We are presently soliciting bids from monument companies. The proposed monument will be granite, approximately seven feet tall to match the stunning Missouri marker, about forty-eight inches wide, and six to eight inches thick. In addition, Mr. William Scaife, well known author and historian, will conduct a "special" staff ride to Allatoona Pass, and donate the proceeds from this ride to the EVHS for use in funding this monument. More information on this staff ride will be promulgated at a later date.
In order to have this monument erected by and dedicated on Saturday, October 5th, the campaign needs your help in spreading the word about this project through your various contacts, organizations, networks, and newsletters. You can greatly assist in broadening our base of support. Jim Dale will soon promulgate a flier for handout and posting on the internet. Those of you attending the Raymond monument dedication in Mississippi can ask participants to enlist in the Allatoona Texas Campaign, and to mark their calendars for the day of the dedication. You can also help out by forwarding this message to all interested organizations and persons.
Also, we ask for your assistance in locating any descendants of the four Texas regiments; the Ninth Texas Infantry, Tenth, Fourteenth, and Thirty-Second Texas Cavalry, who fought at Allatoona. During the monument dedication ceremony, plans are to call out the names of soldiers, and for a relative or comrade to answer "Present." Descendants of Generals Ector, Young, and French will also be recognized.
Please ask that anyone desiring to donate to this project forward contributions to the Etowah Valley Historical Society, P.O. Box 1886, Cartersville, Georgia, 30120, designated to the Texas monument. Anticipated monument cost is approximately $7000.
