Home of the famous Texas Cowboy Reunion, Stamford is a
diverse city with a modern economy based on agriculture, oil, manufacturing and retail. In
November of 1899 the Stamford Townsite Company was organized when the Texas Central
Railway wanted to extend its line forty miles from Albany.
Henry McHarg, president of the TCR, named the town for his
home town of Stamford, Connecticut. The first train ran in Feb. 11, 1900. The town was
incorporated early in 1901 and P.P. Berhtelot, secretary and business manager of the town
site company, was elected the first mayor.
Today Stamford serves as the headquarters of
the Swen R. Swenson Land and Cattle Company,

one of the oldest ranches in the state
encompassing 31,000 acres of ranch and farm land. Located 40 miles north of Abilene on Hwy
277, Stamford offers something for everyone. For boating and fishing enthusiasts Stamford
Lake is a short 15 min. drive from town. The city has a 9-hole golf course, swimming pool,
and several tennis courts. For history buffs there is the Cowboy Country Museum and
numerous historical buildings. The Texas Cowboy Reunion, held annually during the 4th of
July weekend, attracts people from all over the country. In addition to the traditional
rodeo events there is dancing, an art show, BBQ, chuck wagon cook-off, and cowboy poetry.
Hunters flock to Stamford during hunting season to take advantage of the environmental
haven for dove, quail, deer and turkey. For real down-home Texas hospitality, come out
where both the mesquite trees and the friendly people are thick.
