My mother's family was all born in Anson from
1891-1904. My grandfather was Robert Johns Roland; he was tax assessor for
two terms before the family moved on to Houston in 1918.
The reason I am messaging you is to tell you that my aunt, the only surviving
child of my grandfather, will be 100 years old on April 24, 2002. She has
been away from Anson so long and so many of her friends have died, so not many
people still there will remember her, but I thought I would send you the details
and if you want to post something on the Jones County website, you would have
the information.
Lora Bryan Roland, born April 24, 1902, to Robert Johns Roland and his wife
Fannie Pickens Treadwell, in Anson, Texas, the sixth of their seven children.
When she was a child and William Jennings Bryan was running for president one of
the many times, her father took her to the train station to shake his hand,
since she had Bryan in her name. The family moved to Houston in the fall
of 1918, and Lora graduated from Heights High School and attended Sinclair
College. She was married to J. Collier Hurley on March 5, 1929, and later
married to John Anthony McGuire on December 3, 1945. Both husbands are
deceased.
Although she has been away from Anson from many years, she has wonderful
memories of living there. She and two of her sisters attended Miss Jonnie
Colbert's school for young children in the town. The Roland family
originally lived a block or so east of the post office and later moved to what
was then called the Brockett place north of town. R. J. Roland had come to
Jones County to work for his uncle, W. C. Bryan, on the T-Diamond ranch, in
about 1881. After his marriage, Roland had a store on the town square and
then was elected tax assessor of Jones County for two terms.
Lora lives in Houston. She is now infirm and inactive but always enjoys
news of Anson and of her old friends from there. Her home address is 1443
Yale Street, Houston, Texas, 77008.
