In doing some research on religion around the
turn of the century in Fisher Co. The Church of Christ periodical THE EYE
OPENER, published by W. F. Lemmons in Ansom, Texas, discusses a debate held
between C. R. Nichol and A. S. Bradley from 18-22 December 1903 in "Roba,
Fisher County, Texas." From the diary of one of the persons who attended
the debate, Price Billinglsey, I know that the debate took place in Roby, TX.
But since the name is so consistently spelled in the EYE OPENER as "Roba",
I wondered if Roby was ever called Roba.
Also, was there a local paper published in Roby in 1903 that is still
available and might discuss the debate? I'm also interested in the Bradley &
Kelly Hotel at Roby?, of which I have a picture. Any help in this matter is
greatly appreciated. I'm attaching two excerpts in jpg format from the EYE
OPENER in which the name of "Roba" is mentioned.
