History of Butman District Number 28
In 1894 a part of the territory separated from the White Church District Number 10 was formed into the Butman District Number 28. By subscriptions from the patrons of the new school, sufficient funds were raised for the construction of an old-fashioned, one-room frame building, about twenty feet by thirty feet; the equipment was very limited and very poor. The district was composed of about eleven hundred acres of agricultural and pasture land on the Butman ranch in Mulberry Canyon. Because of its location and the fact that Mr. Butman was a trustee many years, always took much interest in the school, and worked for its progress, the school has always been known by its present name. The first teacher was O. A. Templin, a Kansas raised man; he helped to build the school and taught a very successful term of six months. At that time all grades were taught in the school and the teacher was paid sixty-five dollars per month. In 1899 a part of this district was given to Prairie View District Number 34, but it had returned to it again most of this land when Prairie View was attached to Nolan County in 1921.
The present building, a very neat, modern structure with good equipment, was erected at a bonded indebtedness of $1250, voted in 1918; at this time the tax rate was increased to fifteen cents. One year later the rate of taxation was increased to fifty cents and the school became eligible to State Aid, which it has received every year since that time. The work this school year was under the direction of Misses Mozelle Faulk and Margery Butman, whose good services were much appreciated.
