Below you will find the info on the 28th Tx Cavalry, alas I have taken the liberty of adding the 29th as well. It was on the same page. Aren't you lucky!! I am also adding the resume of Horace Randall, the commanding officer. I did not copy the page that stated the publisher and autor, Sorry! When I get back down to the library, I will email it to you.
Horace Randall was born in McNairy County, Tennessee, on January 1, 1833. In 1839 Randal's family moved to the vicinity of San Augustine, Texas. Randal attended the United States Military Academy at West Point and was graduated with the class of 1854, ranking fourty-fifth in a class of fourty-six. Famous Cival War Generals that were Randal's classmates at West Point included G.W. Curtis Lee, Oliver Otis Howard, James Deshler, John Pegram, J.E. Stuart, Archibald Gracie, Stephen Dill Lee, William Dorsey Pender, John B. Villepigue, and Stephen H. Weed. No West Point class contributed more prominent Confeterate and Federal generals than did the class of 1854. Following graduation, Randal fought as both an infantryman and as a dragoon on the southwestern frontier, with duty stations at Fort Washita, Fort Bliss, and Fort Davis. Randal resigned his United States ary commission on February 27, 1861. He refused a second lieutenancy offered by the Confederate government and fought as a private in Virginia during 1861. He returned to Texas and was appointed colonel of the 28th Texas Dismounted Cavalry Regiment in 1862 and severed primarily in Arkansas and Louisiana. Randal fought at Miliken's Bend (June 7, 1863) during the Vickksburg campaign ( spring and summer 1863). He was appointed a brigadier general by E. Kirby Smith on April 8, 1864, and participated in the Battle of Mansfield (April 8, 1864) and Pleasant Hill on the following day.
Randal died of wounds recieved at Jenkins' Ferry, Arkansas, on April 30, 1864. His body was returned to Marshall, Texas, for burial. Randall (Randal) County was named for him.
