I am gathering information now about the Early Blacks in the Republic of Texas and the early statehood days....I will have the Black Slave Census of 1850 and 1860. Also included will be the Black Cemeteries in the Rusk County and surrounding area. If you have any information that you would like to submit, E-mail Me, Gloria B. Mayfield.

In the beginning, some came from Virginia, some from the District of Columbia, then in the miod 1850's, they came from Alabama, Mississippi and Georgiz. In the beginning they came from Africa. There are no known birth certificates on most of these people. They were given ages and first names by the slave master who owned them at that particular time. These words are the words of Barbara Jefferson-Bonner, in her book "The Legacy". It deals with the families of those who came to Holland Quarter Community near Carthage, Texas.

Check out the Bulletin Board for availability on her book.
