Gordon Hildred Hunt and Theodocia (Theo) Propes were married October 10, 1895 in Rusk County, Texas. They had four sons when Gordon died in 1906. Theo (February 9, 1878-March 2, 1977) lived to be ninety-nine years of age. Henry Hunt was only two years old when his father died, too young to help his mother and brothers run the farm where they lived until they were grown.
Roy Albertus, the first son of Gordon and Theo, married Ethel Little. They had one son and two daughters. Marshall married Frances Crawford, and they had seven sons and one daughter. Raymond Floyd married Lorene Rousseau. They had one son and one daughter. Henry Alpheus married Ruth Stone Turner, and they had one son, James (Jimmy) Stone Hunt.
Gordon Hunt’s grandfather was Thomas Hunt, Sr., who is in another story in this book. Theo Propes’ parents were Augustus (Gus) Propes (1847-1925) and Jeanette (Nettie) Carroll (1851-1925), Gus Propes and his brother, John Alexander, came to Texas from Hall County, Georgia. Their home was about one half mile south of the Roquemore Baptist Church where they attended. Gus always asked someone at church to go home with them.
Henry and I, Katie, went to see the old home site, and he pointed out the faint outline of the road. There was a pile of clay, all that was left of the stick and mud chimney that was at the fireplace. We found the place where the old well was located and some flat stones that were part of the front walk. Henry said that Grandpa had a mule named Kate. He and Kate went to Henderson one day and when they got to Willow Lake where the water was flowing over a waterfall, Old Kate refused to cross over the bridge. He had to leave her there and walk into town.
Henry and Ruth Stone were divorced when Jimmy was in high school. About two years later, Henry and I, Katie Lee Petty Young, were married. We have no children, but I have a daughter, Anna Lee, who lives in Uvalde, Texas. Her two sons, Frank and Henry Postell, live here in Henderson. Henry and I enjoy having the children spend a great deal of time with us.
Jimmy married Janie Jones of Bryan, where they live. They have one son, David and one daughter, Dianna. He works for Texas A&M University.
Henry was an automobile mechanic most of his working years and had the Modern Repair Shop on West Main. When he retired, he sold it to Mr. T. H. Stovall, who remodeled the place and called it Stovall’s Used Cars. Henry still goes there every day and does a little light work.
I am a photographer. I worked for Mr. Odell Poovey at Poovey’s Studio for sixteen years. Mrs. Lela Warren and I were partners in Warren and Hunt Studio until we retired. I have an interesting collection of old photographs of people and places in and around Rusk County.
Henry is a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church, where he went when he was growing up. I am a member of the South Main Church of Christ.
