Pictured next is the home of James Neamiah (Need) and Dena Parker Hudson, Herman’s parents. The house was located in the Shiloh Community near Mt. Enterprise until it was sold and moved off the land in 1976. Need built the house about 1906. Prior to that time, the family had lived in a nearby three-room house with a mud and grass chimney.
Need was born December 2, 1876, the son of L. (Dee) and Marion Briley Hudson, who had come earlier that year to Rusk County from Georgia. Dee farmed his land, using a mule called Bell, which worked the fields with him until shortly before it died at the age of thirty-six.
Dena was born April 9, 1880, the daughter of William Franklin (Bud) and Addie Amanda Little Parker. She and Need had four sons, George Ferris, Robert Austin, James, and our subject, Herman Norris. All of the boys grew up in the old home where Herman, the youngest, was born. Many precious memories linger around this house, which was one of the favorite gathering places for young people of the community. Nearby neighbors were the J. A. Threadgill and Albert Harrington families.
Herman was born May 10, 1909 and married Mary Cadenhead on July 4, 1931. They lived in the old home, and Herman worked as a mechanic and was a bus driver for the Minden School. Then he was maintenance man at Panola Junior College until his death in 1970.
Mary’s parents were James Thomas (born July 15, 1879) and Mary Ann Wallace Cadenhead (born March 31, 1876). Mary’s grandparents were George Allen and Jeffie Louise Johnson Cadenhead and Cary and Minerva Wallace.
Herman and Mary’s son, James Norris (J.N.), was born August 24, 1933. J. N. graduated from Lon Morris College, attended McMurray College, then graduated from Stephen F. Austin College. He taught school one year before going into the Army Medical Detachment.
J. N. is presently employed by Moore Business Forms in Houston. He is married to Janice Oliver from Lufkin. She is a graduate of Stephen F. Austin with a master’s degree in counseling and a doctorate from the University of Houston. She is employed at North Harris County College. She and J. N. have a son, James Clay, born August 28, 1961, who is a student at the University of Houston.
