HOYLE FAMILY

William S. Hoyle, son of John Hoyle of Hancock County, Georgia, was born February 10, 1776 and married Martha Gordy on October 24, 1815. Martha was the daughter of Leonard and Elizabeth Parker Gordy. William died May 22, 1853.

At least four of William and Martha’s children settled in Rusk County, where they reared their families. Little is known of the other five children: W. B., born in 1816; James M., born in 1819; Nancy, born in 1821; Lafayette W., born in 1837; and Francis Marion. Although Francis M. is not known to have come to Rusk County, records reveal that he was born March 27, 1832 and enlisted in the Confederate Army at Thomaston, Georgia, May 11, 1861 as a private in Company D. 13^th Regiment. He married Mary Jane Lumpkin and they had a son, Joseph Henry Lumpkin Hoyle.

Four children of this family are known to have come to Rusk County. John A. (December 22, 1817-July 24, 1895) married Malinda Niblett (July 18, 1820-June 26, 1896) on October 15, 1837. They arrived in Rusk County in the 1850’s and settled on the John Hallum and Henry Chapman original grant. John and Malinda’s children were: Sarah Frances (March 3, 1839-?), who married Thomas Conway on January 19, 1854 (See Conway story), and John James (November 27, 1841-June 16, 1864). Both Sarah Frances and John James are buried in Pine Hill Baptist Cemetery.

Martha Ann Hoyle (June 14, 1823-January 8, 1878) married William Blount (September 13, 1825-May 16, 1884) on November 10, 1844. They purchased land on Iron’s Bayou and Martin Creek near the community of Pine Hill, where they lived until their deaths and are buried in Pine Hill Baptist Cemetery. They had these children: Sarah Frances, Ernest Emmett, Franklin, William Jared, James Wesley, Mary Elizabeth, Oliver Marshall, John Andrew, and Lefelia Elizabeth Blount.

William O. Hoyle (April 24, 1825-January 23, 1872) married Lucy Dennis on September 22, 1853, in Rusk County. He settled on the John Hallum original grant and was on the 1850 Rusk County tax list. He is buried at Pine Grove Cemetery. Their seven children were Theodosia, Nancy Jane, Thomas S., Sallie Ann, John R., Franklin, and Lafayette Hoyle.

Benjamin Franklin Hoyle (August 16, 1829-August 14, 1871) married Martha Thompson and they had seven children: Frances Josephine, William Brady, Harlow Eugenia, Georgia, Rosabell, Epsy, and Ella Hoyle.

According to her pension application, Mrs. M. A. Hoyle, of Chapman, Rusk County, stated that she married B. F. Hoyle in January 1851 in Montgomery County, Alabama and that he served in the 30^th Alabama Infantry about three years. Apparently they came to Rusk County before 1867. They settled on the Chapman grant near the other Hoyle families and appear on the 1867 tax list.
