The Holleman family originated in the United States at an early date. The immigrant was Christopher Hollyman, who was in Surry County, Virginia, as early as 1660.
The Josiah J. Holleman family arrived in Rusk County in 1853, having come from McNairy County, Tennessee. Josiah J. Holleman was born in 1785 in Surry County, Virginia. He died in 1862 and is buried in the Holleman Cemetery, between Laneville and Mt. Enterprise. He was married in Tennessee, circa 1815, to Jane (Jennie) Elliott, who was born in Pennsylvania in 1792. She died circa 1869 and is also buried in the Holleman Cemetery. They were the parents of the following eight children: William Arthur Holleman, who was born in 1817 in Tennessee, and who married Malinda Swinn; Matilda J. Holleman, who was born in 1819 in Tennessee, and married John Wolverton, Jr., and moved with her husband to Anderson County, Texas; Caroline Holleman, born in 1821 in Hardin County, Tennessee, and died in 1868, and is buried in the Gatlin Cemetery in Mt. Enterprise, and was married, circa 1841, to Edward Valentine Gatlin; Green W. Holleman, born in 1822 in Hardin County, Tennessee, and married Eliza J.____; Hyram B. Holleman, born in 1824 in McNairy County, Tennessee, and married Martha _____; Clinton D. Holleman, born in 1828 in McNairy County, Tennessee, and married Sarah J. Lewis in Rusk County on December 15, 1855, before he died around November, 1872; Josiah John Holleman, who was born in May, 1826 in McNairy County, Tennessee, died on December 10, 1907, and is buried next to his parents in the Holleman Cemetery as he never married; Mary Clemintine Holleman, who was born December 31, 1833 in McNairy County, Tennessee, died July 16, 1918, and is buried in the Holleman Cemetery, was married to John Alexander Koonce in Rusk County on August 22, 1853.
