EDWARD VALENTINE GATLIN

The Gatlin Family originated in the United States in 1836 when the immigrant, John Gatlin, arrived in Isle of Wight County, Virginia.

The Edward Valentine Gatlin Family arrived in Rusk County in 1853. Edward Valentine Gatlin was born in 1819 in South Carolina. He died September 6, 1883 and is buried in the Gatlin Cemetery in Mt. Enterprise. In Tennessee in 1841 he married Caroline Holleman, who was born in 1821 in Hardin County, Tennessee. Her parents were Josiah J. Holleman and his wife, Jane (Jennie) Elliott. She died in 1868 and is buried in the Gatlin Cemetery. They were the parents of the seven children enumerated here.

Hiram Best Gatlin was born October 1, 1842 in Tennessee. He married, first Eliza Jane King in Rusk County, January 15, 1869, and second, Mrs. Sallie E. McDaniel in Rusk County, August 13, 1898. He died in Benford, Polk County, Texas, July 5, 1925 and is buried in the Striker Cemetery, Polk County, Texas.

James Henry Gatlin was born December 14, 1843, in Tennessee. He married Josephine Alzeia Haltom in Rusk County, April 25, 1867. He died February 18, 1907 and is buried in the Gatlin Cemetery in Mt. Enterprise.

Filmore Gatlin was born August 10, 1852 in Tennessee. He married Barbara Lucinda Elizabeth Edwards in Rusk County, November 14, 1889. He died in Rand, Kaufman County, Texas and is buried in the Fox Cemetery, Kaufman County. He died November 26, 1941.

Major Bird Gatlin was born August 2, 1854 in Rusk County, Texas. He married Margaret Jane Alice Furlow in Rusk County, November 18, 1875. He died February 20, 1939 and is buried in the Gatlin Cemetery in Mt. Enterprise.

Jackson Donaldson Gatlin was born September 21, 1857 in Rusk County, Texas. He married Harriett Ophelia Farmer in Smith County, Texas, December 21, 1893. He died December 1, 1941 and is buried in the Friendship Cemetery in Smith County, Texas.

Sarah Josephine Gatlin was born September 8, 1858, in Rusk County, Texas. She married General Samuel Houston Matlock in Rusk County, June 27, 1878. She died July 29, 1927 in Altus, Jackson County, Oklahoma and is buried there. Anna Irene Gatlin was born in February 1860 in Rusk County, Texas. She married A. Jack Wagnon in Rusk County, February 18, 1886. She died and is buried in Duncan, Stephens County, Oklahoma.
