Mumford Sidney Freeman was born April 5, 1870 in Rusk County, Texas.  He was the son of Noah Thomas Freeman, born in 1838 in Georgia, and Jane Amanda Hill Freeman, born in 1849 in Desota Parish, Louisiana.  She was the daughter of Josiah and Nancy Jane Greenwood Hill of Desota Parish.

Noah Thomas Freeman was the son of Mumford S. Freeman, who was born in 1810 in Georgia and died in 1850 in Rusk County, and Martha Ann Buckner Freeman, daughter of Benjamin and Miriah Sanders Buckner.

Noah and July Ann Rogers Freeman were parents of Mumford S. Freeman, who came to Rusk County, in 1848 from Henry County, Georgia.  Noah died in 1840 in Henry County, Georgia and was buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Hampton, Georgia, near the present site of Atlanta Raceway.

Mumford S. Freeman came to Texas about the same time as his sister, Miriah, and his brother-in-law, John S. Buckner, came to settle in the Pine Hill Community.

Mumford S. and Martha Ann were the parents of eight children:  Joseph P., Noah Thomas, Sarah A., Mary Ann Miriah, David Moseley, Lydia Drucilla, July Ann, and Lucy.  Mumford S. died just two years after his arrival in Texas, leaving Martha on a large farm, to rear the children alone, the youngest child, Lucy, not yet born.

Noah Thomas Freeman married Jane Amanda Hill, called Jenny, June 20, 1867 in Rusk County.  Jenny died March 2, 1917 and is buried in the Stewart Cemetery.

Noah Thomas was a Primitive Baptist preacher and rode horseback to the surrounding communities to fill preaching appointments.  He left home on one such trip, going into Louisiana in 1889, and never returned.

Noah T. and Jenny had the following children:  Thomas; Edgar, born March 19, 1868, who married Lula White and died in 1928; Mumford Sidney, my grandfather, who married Sarah Flora Barton, daughter of Thomas and Sarah Brown Everett Barton.  Jeff Stringer, born in 1875, who married Ophelia Chatman, and died in 1933; James Arthur, born in 1881, who married Loney Kilpratric; Noah Lyman, born February 2, 1885, who married Willie ?; and Alice Maude and Joley Lee who both died young.

Mumford S. and Sarah (Sadie) were the parents of eleven children.  William Mumford, who was born January 5, 1889, married Leatha Taylor Pepper.  He died in 1962.  Johnny B. Benjamin, who was born April 10, 1891, married Lonnie Leona Ferguson.  He died in 1961.  Dillie Mae, who was born in 1893, married Joe Bill Graham.  Odie Thomas, who was born in 1896, married Ollie Smith.  He died in 1963.  Nollie Eugenia, who was born in 1898, died young.  Claudie Jane, who was born in 1900, died young.  Harvie Lee, who was born in 1902, married Ora Mae Stokes.  He died in 1959.  Flora Alberta, who was born in 1905, married Edd Loden and, second, Charlie Gordon.  James Carlton, who was born in 1908, first married Hazel Elder, later married Irene Moore, and still later, Maggie Ferguson Prior.  J. D., who was born in 1909, married Inez Grigsby.  He died in 1977.  Dollie Ray, who was born in 1912, married first, Mary Roselle Wilson, and, second, Mayola Stewart Darnel.

Mumford Sidney Freeman died September 12, 1957, and Sarah Flora died April 24, 1959.  Both are buried in Stewart Cemetery, along with most of their family.
