NEWTON CURBO

Newton Curbo was the fifth child of James L. Curbo and Minerva Elizabeth Nicholas. He was born in 1860 in Rusk County, Texas.

Newton married Romy Nicholas, March 8, 1877 in Rusk County, Texas. Romy was born in 1860 in Tennessee.

Newton and Romy had only one child, William G. Curbo, who was born February 16, 1878 in Rusk County. He married Susan Moores, who was the daughter of Charles H. Moores and Edna Thompson.

William expired on January 13, 1952, and Susan expired on December 27, 1963. They are buried in the Lakewood Memorial Cemetery, Henderson, Texas.

William G. and Susan had only one child. Ruby Marie was born November 16, 1919 in Henderson, Texas. Ruby has taught school at Price, Texas for many years. She holds a B. S. Degree from Stephen F. Austin University, an M. S. Degree from East Texas State University, is a life member of Phi Chapter Kappa Gamma, and was selected as an Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America in 1974.

Ruby was selected to appear in 1974, 1975 and 1976 editions of "Personalities of the South" and was selected to appear in the 1977 edition of the "Dictionary of International Biography." She is a member of the First Methodist Church in Henderson, Texas and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 597 in Henderson.

On August 18, 1951, Ruby married James L. Miles. Dr. James L. Miles received his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas. He was a member of First Methodist Church in Henderson, a member of Rocky Mount Masonic Lodge No. 63 AF and AM, the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 597, a life member of Phi Delta Kappa fraternity and National Council of Teachers of English, a life member of Texas State Teachers Association, a member of Kappa Alpha Order, a member of Who’s Who in American Colleges, a member of Alpha Order, a member of Alpha Chi, and Sigma Tau Delta, and appeared in the "Dictionary of International Biography" in 1973. He was a veteran of World War II.

Dr. Miles taught English at East Texas State University and was head of the English Department at Paris Junior College before joining the Kilgore College faculty in August 1969. Dr. Miles expired on May 9, 1976. He is buried in Lakewood Memorial Cemetery, Henderson, Texas.

Ruby and James Miles had no children, but both have dedicated their lives to teaching and preparing thousands of children for their future.
