Charlie Wilburn Burton, married Norma Burt, daughter of Dr. M. A. Burt and Rosa Burt, on December 8, 1912. They lived near Millville at first while Charlie worked in his brother Luther’s store. Charlie also farmed for a while. Their first daughter, Cleo, was born there on November 1, 1913. Later they moved to Henderson, where their second daughter, Charline, was born on March 17, 1927.
Charlie worked for the State Highway Department for several years, traveling to many towns in East Texas. When the family moved back to Henderson, he built a home about two miles out on the Millville Road. At that time he worked for the Gulf Oil Company. He and Norma lived there for the rest of their lives. Later in life, Charlie had a used lumber company in Henderson.
There was a lot of musical talent on both sides of the Charlie Burton family, and both Charlie and Norma inherited a big share of it. Charlie used to love to play his fiddle while Norma accompanied him at the piano. They were popular entertainers at many parties and dances both when they were young and as they grew older. This musical talent was handed down in all the generations of their family.
Charlie was an avid fisherman, too. He spent all his spare time fishing in just about every lake and river in East Texas. The reason I know so much about this family is that it was my family. I am Charline Burton Pool.
Cleo Burton (November 1, 1913-December 28, 1972), married Odell Cashion, (April 18, 1913-May 21, 1961). They had one son, Charles Ray Cashion, born March 31, 1934. Ray Cashion married Billie Jean Melton, and their children are Vicky Lynn and Kevin Ray.
In 1946 Charline Burton, born March 17, 1927, married Vernon George Pool, who was born June 19, 1923. He was the son of Ortie W. and Sudie Pool of the Church Hill Community.
Charline and Vernon’s son, Davy George Pool, born April 25, 1947, married Jean Crawford, born April 18, 1948. Their child is Angus George Pool, who was born May 15, 1966. Cathy Ann Pool, born May 21, 1948, married Ronnie D. Waggoner. Their children are: Timothy Duane Waggoner, born February 11, 1975; and Lucinda Louella (Cindy) Waggoner, born October 1, 1976.
Charlie W. Burton (November 4, 1890-December 8, 1963) and Norma Burton (February 11, 1893-May 15, 1976) are buried in the Millville Cemetery.
A reunion of the Burton family was held on July 4, 1981; and though so many of the older ones are gone and many more were unable to come, there were still eighty-two family members who were there from all over the country. I’m sure Oscar F. and Laura would be very proud of their multitude of descendants and their prolific continuation of the Burton family name and heritage both now and into the future.
