I am Maye Bailey Box, the seventh child of I. E. and Mary Alice Bailey. When I was a little girl, about 1906-1907, I moved from Cherokee County, where I was born, to Rusk County, about two miles from Glenfawn. Dad bought the land from Mr. McKnight. I don’t know his first name, but his daughter was named Jewel. Mr. Fussel had the only store in Glenfawn in 1913.
I went to school in Glenfawn. There my dad gave me my only spanking when I sassed him. I was about eight years old. He said, "I’m going to whip you when I get through with this gate." In the afternoon, bless his heart, he went with mother to the turkey pen, and I saw him break a limb off the Chinquapin. He hit me two or three times, but it didn’t hurt. After he was older, I told him the whipping didn’t hurt. Bless his heart, he laughed and said, "I’ll get you yet."
Dad traded his farm to Mr. Bud Smith and we moved back to Gallatin near Rusk, Texas in Cherokee County. I had my first date with one of the school boys.
There are lots of things I could tell you about a lot of people. The school was up on the hill where there were hickory trees and hickory nuts. Oh, for those days again! I am 81 years old now. All of my family have gone to meet their God. I am the only one of I. E. Bailey’s family living. I would like to write a lot for the Henderson paper about life in Rusk County. I would like to visit back there once again.
