John J. Dulin was born in Carroll County, Georgia, on October 20, 1849, the oldest child of Daniel and Dorcas (McCall) Dulin. John’s family came to Rusk County from the state of Alabama when he was about eight years old and settled on a farm near Minden. John’s mother died when he was eleven. His father remarried in 1864 and left Rusk County, but John decided to stay. He moved to Zion Hill and joined the Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church there in 1870. John J. Dulin and Alvira Welch, daughter of Mina Harrison and Sarah Anne (Tinsley) Welch, were married in the Zion Hill Church on January 15, 1871. John and Alvira had one child, John Daniel, born December 7, 1871. Alvira died in 1873. According to a family account, she called her sister, Tempy, to her deathbed and asked her to look after her husband and child. On September 27, 1874, Tempy and John J. Dulin were married. To their union were born nine children: James Luke, Henry Oswald, Sarah Anne, William Duff, Joseph Edmond, Dave Finley, Emma A., Dock Dawson, and Dottis Gattis Dulin. John became part owner in the Alliance Cotton Yard, a ginning factory situated in the vicinity of the old Henderson Railroad Depot’s original location. It operated under this name until his widow sold his remaining interest in the cotton yard in 1903. It then became the Culp and Hendrich Cotton Yard. In June 1895 John J. went to his well to draw water. As he returned to his house, he suffered a heat stroke and collapsed. His death left a thirty-eight-year-old widow with five minor children ranging in age from fifteen to less than a year. Tempy Dulin reared her family alone for the next ten years. On October 15, 1905, she married Bolin Green Jimmerson (1856-1939) and moved, with her youngest children, to Dallas County. After “Boly” Jimmerson’s death, Tempy returned to Rusk County. She died in 1941 and was buried beside John J. Dulin in the Pine Grove Cemetery. John Daniel Dulin (1871-1922) first married Lizzie Cates (1876-1956). They had two children, John Henry and Ellie. John’s second marriage was Elitha Qumiles Brinson (1888-1937). Their children are: Rosa, “Barton”, Minnie, Grover, Timpa, Martin, Anna, and Mary Alice. James Luke Dulin (1875-1954) first married Vallonia Ward (1880-1930). Their children are: Adolphus, who lives in Dallas, and Mrs. Wanda Hancher of Garden City, Texas. Henry Oswald Dulin (1876-1926) married “Jeannie” Fears. Their children are: Macey, Nomi, Marshall, Odis, Dewey, William, Ollie, Dorothy, Hardy, Dottice, Annie, and Cecil Dulin. Sarah Anne Dulin (1879-1904) married John Archie Herring (1870-1934) and had four children: Bettie, Mattie, Lillie, and John Arthur Herring. William Duff Dulin (1880-1948) married Myrtle Johnson. Their children are: Fred, Luke, Floy, Elvie, Earl, and Chelistie Dulin. Dave Finley Dulin (1886-1954) married Lucy C. Ward (1886-1975), and their children are: Johnnie Augustus, Bessie Mae, Lavenia, and Rayford Finley Dulin. Emma A. Dulin (1888-1972) married John Wilson Little (1883-1971) and had seven children: Curtis, Harvey, Audie, Andy, Earl, Roy, and Dottice Little. Dottis Gattis Dulin (1894-1945) married Dollie M. Hudson (1894-1969). Their children are: Inez, Tempy, Gatis Jenkins, and Dan Douglas Dulin. Joseph Edmond and Dock Dawson Dulin both died young. They are buried in Pine Grove Cemetery.
