10-03-03 Obituaries Marshall News Messenger Robert Lamont Anderson Robert Lamont Anderson, 74, died at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston on Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003. The son of John W. and Grace Lamont Anderson, he was born in Arkadelphia, Ark., and finished high school there. After two years (1946-48) with the U.S. Army in Japan, he attended Tulsa University, where he was a charter member of Sigma Chi fraternity, and worked for Dunn and Bradstreet while earning his degree in business administration, along with his Air Force ROTC commission. He later received his master's degree in business administration from North Texas University. After a long association with Caterpillar Tractor Co., he elected to return to the South, particularly Texas, where in 1959 he went with Southern Union Gas Co. in Dallas. While in Dallas, he served as president of the Purchasing Management Association of Dallas from 1974 to 1975. He was sent by Southern Union to attend Harvard University's Graduate School of Business Management. In 1976, Bob became one of Southern Union's vice presidents, in charge of its Gulf Coast Division, living in Port Arthur, where he was president of the Port Arthur Chamber of Commerce for a term, named to the board of directors at Allied Merchants Bank and president of Port Arthur's United Community Services in 1984. He also was on the board of directors for P.A. Industrial Development Corp. until his retirement in 1988, when he and his wife, Margaret, moved to Hot Springs Village, Ark., where they resided six years before moving to Longview in 1995. Bob, or "Monte" as his friends knew him, was a longtime member of the Rotary Club, president of the Port Arthur Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and Longview's Antique Car Club. He had a passion for old cars and enjoyed restoring them to a like-new condition. Besides his wife, Margaret, Bob is survived by three children, Robert Jr. of Austin and Laurie Hemming and Alice Butler, both of Dallas; three stepchildren, Margaret Clay Spears of Greenback, Tenn.; Byron Harrison Jr. of Knoxville, Tenn., and Jan A. Harrison of Harriman, Tenn.; two brothers, John W. Anderson of Russellville, Ark., and Albert Anderson of Greeley, Colo.; two grandchildren, Cassandra Grace Hemming and Cody Hemming of Dallas; and his brother and sister-in-law, Dr. William and Glenda Pearce of Longview. A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at the Welch Funeral & Memorial Center Chapel with Dr. Dan Miller officiating. The family received friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to a charity of choice.
