12/30/2003 Obituaries The Daily Sentinel Billy Alvis Simms Cemetery, Rock Hill Community Services for Billy Alvis, 73, of Huntington will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Gipson-Metcalf Funeral Home Chapel in Lufkin with the Rev. David Merritt and the Rev. F.R. Slaughter officiating. Interment will follow in the Simms Cemetery in the Rocky Hill Community. Mr. Alvis was born September 3, 1930, in Etoile, Texas, the son of Dora Bell Whitehead and Lawrence Taylor Alvis. He died Sunday, December 28, 2003, in Lufkin hospital. Mr. Alvis had been employed in the maintenance departments of Lufkin Industries and Temple-Inland. He had also been the owner/operator of Alvis Air Conditioning. He was a member of the International Association of Machinists, Local 1999. Mr. Alvis was a member and deacon of the Rocky Hill Baptist Church. He had resided in Angelina and Nacogdoches counties all his life. Survivors include his wife, Delois Alvis of Huntington; daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Claude Williams of Huntington; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Sylvia Alvis, Ricky and Teresa Alvis, all of Huntington, James and Cherie Alvis of Zavalla; brother, O.D. Alvis of Rowlett, L.T. Alvis Jr. of Arlington; sisters, Mary Vick of Garland, Ossie Bell King of Nacogdoches; eight grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. In addition to his parents, Mr. Alvis was also preceded in death by a son, Glenn Alvis; and brothers, Cecil Alvis, Gordon Alvis and George Alvis.
