W.P. BATES DIES AT 80
McALLEN-- Services for William P. Bates who died at his home on North Broadway about 6 a.m.today will be announced by Kreidler-Pride Funeral Home. Mr. Bates suffered a stroke. He had not been ill previously. A native of Ohio, he had been in the nursery business since 1890 in Ohio, Kansas and the Valley. He had lived in the Valley since 1927. Mr. Bates was a member of the First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Emma Bates of McAllen; a son, Frank D. Bates of San Francisco, Calif; a step-son, R. H. Smith of McAllen; and two grandsons, Raymond C. Smith of McAllen and Paul H. Smith of Brownsville.

ARVIL C. DICUS
    EDINBURG - Arvil C. Dicus, 82, died Friday at his residence after an illness.  A native of Portalles, N.M., he was a longtime Valley resident and had lived in Edinburg since 1952.
    He is survived by his wife, Willie Mae Dicus of Edinburg; two sons, Robert E. Dicus of New Braunfels and William E. Dicus of Clovis, Calif.; three daughters, Laura A. Robinson of Laredo, Patsy A. Dicus of Clarksville, Ga., and Frances A. Dicus of McAllen; a brother, Johnny C. Dicus of Harlingen; eight grandchildren.
    Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Skinner Funeral Home in Edinburg.  Graveside services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery in McAllen.

MARIE COLLINS     ALAMO - Marie "Chris" Collins, 65, died July 4, 1995 at her home.     Born in Dallas, Collins had lived in Alamo for 15 years.  She was vice president and secretary for Collins Aircraft Dynamics, Inc. in Alamo.     Survivors include her husband, Paul W. Collins of Alamo; a son, Ron Collins of Alamo; a sister, Rosie Lee Redfearn of Dallas; and a grandson.     Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Kreidler Funeral Home on North 10th Street in McAllen, with a family member present from 4 to 7 p.m.  Graveside funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco.  The Rev. David Mann will officiate.     Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Marjorie Naylor, 211 Daffodil, McAllen, or the Sandi Jo Funk Hospice Program, P. O. HAROLD "PUG" E. McGEE     MISSION - Harold "Pug" E. McGee, 77, died June 21, 1993 at McAllen Medical Center.  Born in Iowa, McGee was a truck driver.  He had lived in the Rio Grande Valley since 1977 and in Mission for the past 11 years.     Survivors include his wife, Madge McGee of Mission; three sons, Mervin and Mark McGee, both of Des Moines, Iowa, and Mike McGee of Greeley, Colo.; a step-son, James Schroeder of Elkhard, Ind.; three daughters, Linda McGee, Nancy Cone, and Doddie Howe, all of Des Moines, Iowa; a step-daughter, Donna Parker of South Bend, Ind.; three sistera, Dollie Mead of Cuba, Mo., Ethel Rouze of Aurora, Colo., and Thelma Grunendyk of Tracy, Ind.     No local services will be held.  Memorial services are pending and will be held at a later date in Des Moines, Iowa.     Local arrangements were under the direction of Virgil Wilson & Sons Mortuary in Mission.     Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 1102 Ash, Mission, Texas, 78572. MRS. ETHEL M. RUDE
    ALAMO - Mrs. Ethel M. Rude, 85, died Wednesday in Good Samaritan Nursing Home in McAllen.
    Mrs. Rude came to Alamo in 1932 from Topeka, Kan., and was a member of Alamo Community Church and the Sorossis Club.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Rude, in 1961.
    Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. N. L. (Murial) Reyna of Brownsville, a son-in-law, Ellis Beavers of Pharr; three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
    Services are pending and will be announced by Skinner Funeral Home.

MRS. ETHEL RUDE
    ALAMO - Services for Mrs. Ethel Rude, 85, who died Wednesday, will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Skinner Funeral Home.  The Rev. Bill Marietta of the Rio Grande Bible Institute will officate.
    Burial will be in Valley Memorial Gardens.

   Funeral services are to be held at 10;00a.m. Tuesday from the Marion-Nelson chapel on South Main here for James Albert SMITHAM 53, prominent Rio Grande Valley busines man. He died at his residence Sunday, at 601 South Twelfth Street after a short illness.. ( died May 21, 1933)  Rev. E. A. HUNTER will officiate. Internment will be held at Roselawn Cemetery with the Masonic Lodge in charge.
SMITHAM had resided here for 8 years. He was president & manager of the Valley Iron Works San Juan.
Survivors; his wife Mable CRIGLER SMITHAM; 3 sons, Lymon E., Dallas N.L. and Jim Earl, McAllen; a daughter, Miss Lucille, McAllen; and 2 brothers, N.L., Eastland, Tex., and J.W. Smitham, Denver Co.
SMITHAM was the Inventor of the Smitham Irrigation Gate and other appliances. He was affiliated with the Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge & Spanish American War Veterans' Organization. He formerly served on the Policeboard and as Alderman at Florence, Colorado.

DE WITT G. STROMATT     

McALLEN - DeWitt G. Stromatt, 63, retired McAllen blacksmith, died at his home here last night about 9:15 p.m. after a lingering illness.     Funeral services will be held at the Martin-Nelson chapel at 2 p.m. tomorrow.  Rev. W. W. Leamons, pastor of the Church of Christ, will officiate.  Interment will be in Rose Lawn Cemetery.     Mr. Stromatt has been a resident of the Valley for the past 14 years.  He was a native of Kentucky.     His survivors include his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Lorene Greene of McAllen and Miss Vivian Stromatt, also of McAllen; and two sons, W. D. of Houston and Richard of Mansford, Okla.     Active pallbearers will be John Stevens, W. W. Barthel, T. W. Worley, Sam Copeland, M. M. Culwell and C. W. Whitten. END

MRS. W. A. (FRANCES) WOLVERTON
    MISSION - Funeral arrangements are pending with Virgil Wilson Funeral Home in Mission for Mrs. W. A. (Frances) Wolverton, 85, long-time Mission resident, who died late Friday afternoon in a Pharr nursing home.
    Mrs. Wolverton was born in Greenville.  She was a member of the First Methodist Church in Mission and the Women's Tuesday Club.
    Surviving her are two sons, Harold E. Downard of Berkley, Mich., and James S. Downard of Trotwood, Ohio; one stepson, Herbert Wolverton of Dallas, and three grandchildren.
