I am trying to find information on my great grandfather William Cooper. I know he lived in Vernon Parish, probably in Pickering. He died in 1899. I do not know his wife's name, but they had at least one child, Dora Elizabeth who was my grandmother. Also my other great grandparents lived in Pickering or in Vernon Parish. There names were William and Mahala Bailey. Any help you can give would be appreciated greatly.

Huggins, Robert L., b 1840 - 1845 AL.  Family lore has it that Robert and his sister Ellen Lucindia Huggins were brought into the Rapides/Vernon Parish area by Joseph Calhoun.  1850 census shows both in his houshold. Sister Ellen Lucindia was in the 1860 household of John L. Johnson and wife Nancy Huggins.  Ellen was 18 and later married John L's son Aaron Johnson. Seeking parent or additional information on Robert L. and Ellen L. Huggins.

I am looking for the "Peters Burg" or "Petersberg" cemetery. It should be a mid-1800's cemetery and it was supposed to be in either Beauregard or Vernon Parish. I am mostly looking for the location of the cemetery, but I am also interested in the grave of a William Henry Keller that is supposed to be buried there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Am looking for information on my Grandpa's ancestors.  My Grandpa's name was Jonathon or Kenneth (long story!) Grady WILLIAMS and he was born Sept. 30, 1917  (I'm told he was born in Mobile AL) and died June 29, 1979 in St. Luke's Hospital in Phoenix AZ. He has/had 3 brothers.  The oldest of which was Ray, who's passed away.  The other two brothers (to my knowledge) are still alive.  Their names are Dewey and Billy. My Grandfathers parents names were Judge WILLIAMS and Ella WELCH.  I don't have much info on Judge, but Ella was born Jan. 28, 1902 and died in April 1985 in Mustang OK.  At this point, we have ample reason to believe that both Judge and Ella are originally from Vernon Parish LA.  We know that Ella moved back to the area (Anacoco) in the late 1960's or early 1970's and probably lived there until the early 1980's.  Also have reason to believe that the two raised their children there, at least for a time. Any help and/or leads would be greatly appreciated!!

James Richard SWAIN married Sarah. in Thomas Co. Georgia 1843. I believe her last name to be Vick. They were in Rapides Parish by 1850. One daughter was born in Georgia. Mary Jane Dec. 1844. The 1850 census lists him as James R. Swan, probably due to the census taker's penmanship. Also listed in the same area is a James Swan (Swain) who I believe to be James Richard's father altho I have no proof yet. His wife was Racheal. There were also many Vick's listed closeby who I believe to be Sarah's family. I would love to be able to find some of the descendants of this family. Children listed for James (Swan) Swain, age 60 in 1850, were John, Jeramiah,Florina, Appleton,(may be wrong spelling)Marlin D.B and Benard.  I believe Sarah's father may have been Daniel Vick, Wife Mary. I am Tom Cain, more formally, Thomas Luther Cain, son of Maggie Ann Harralson (1902-1941) & Jesse Luther Cain (1895-1963), the son of Robert DeMarquis Cain (1852-1931), etc. of Burr Ferry, Vernon, LA. When I retired a year or so ago, I dug out a copy of family tree data "published" about 1969 or 1970 by two of my older cousins (both dead now) for the Cain, Evans, Chaddick, and Scoggins families of Vernon Parish. Since then, I have established contact with a few relatives in an effort to bring the data up-to-date.  I have been moderately successful in my efforts to up-date the data; and, at the same time, have expanded it somewhat, and corrected a number of errors. I would like to (eventually) extend the listing of data to include all the descendants of my great grandfather, Jonathan Day Cain, who settled (about 1851-1852) in the unincorporated area now known as the community of "Evans" (where I went to grammar school), in the western part of what is now Vernon Parish.  He died there in 1887.

Both ladies beieve to have died in the 1920s in or around Leesville.  But I can find no graves or death info. The spelling of Robbins vs. Robins is questionable. The father of Edward is believe to be a William, out of Miss, but is not confirmed. Will & Lizzie had two children, Tessie & Luther 'Luke'. Tessie & Luke were raised by Candis, when parents died while they were young. Buck's wife was Lela (?Robins)..( died 1990 in Leesville) from Texas, her mother was believe to be Anne Hext, who married a Henry Phillips ... this is not confirmed.

I'm looking for descendants of Oscar PEAVY (3 Nov 1874-25 Jun 1956), late of Vernon Parish.  He was born in Marion Co. TX and appears on an affidavit signed in 1929 in Vernon Parish.  He is reported buried in Gill Cemetery outside of Leesville but I've been unable to locate any cemetery by that name.  I even asked the people of a "local" funeral director and they didn't recall it.  They suggested it might be on the Fort Polk Reservation.  Oscar PEAVY was brother to my late grandfather and may have had children named Gladys and Oliver.  I've found a 1910 Census listing in Angelina Co., TX for an Oscar PEAVY and am persuaded it's the same man but have no real proof.  He is reported buried next to his wife "Erna O." whose dates are 1882-1940 in the Gill Cemetery.  Any information gratefully received.

I am hoping you can help me on my GOINS line. I have an Mary Melissa DAWSON (daughter of Thomas DAWSON) shown on a 1900 Texas Census as a Widow "Melissa GOINS" with one living child: Florence GOINS. She was pregnant with my Great grandfather Oscar at the time and living with her Widower father, Thomas DAWSON and her little sister Henrietta DAWSON. After or around the birth of Oscar, Melissa married William Lawrence GOINS, son of William Thomas GOINS and Delilah NASH. Melissa Dawson GOINS and William Lawrence had children together. He was a widower also, when they married, and had several young children from his deceased wife, Sue DOWDEN. Some of Sue's children have told that Oscar was an illegitimate son of a Doctor HOLLIS. But I have not found anything to back this up. I cannot find a record of his birth. He could not even find record of his birth when he tried ot apply for his social security benefits. I am wondering if you have any info on this family, and if you know who Melissa's first GOINS husband was. She is buried in Vernon Parish in the BeechGrove Methodist Congregational Cemetary beside William Lawrence GOINS. (His stone reads "Larance GOINS" and hers reads Melissa Goins HAMILTON. So she apparantly married again after William Lawrence GOINS death.) William Lawrence GOINS raised my Great grandfather, Oscar GOINES as his own son. Oscar could have been born as a HOLLIS, DAWSON, or GOINS. He has always carried the GOINES name. But I would like to find more information on Mary Melissa's first husband before I rule out that he could not have been Oscar's real father.

I am researching the family of Francis Marion FRANKLIN and Gatsey Ann SUTTON, wife of Francis. They moved after 1870 with three of their adult children, JOHN and PIERCE FRANKLIN, and MARTHA ANN who married ANDREW JACKSON HOWARD. They were born in GA, lived in FL between 1840 and 1870. Gatsey Ann was born in 1820 and died in 1879. Francis Marion was born in 1812 and died in 1889. They were buried at Anacoco Cemetery, Leesville, Vernon Parish, LA. I am seeking help in verifying their burial site and with families of their children: John, Pierce and Martha Ann. Please help me if you can.
